Russian steel prices continue to fall, as Turkey's lack of demand and generally limited opportunities due to sanctions put pressure on Russian steelmakers, who are now offering steeper discounts on slabs and billets to entice buyers. Due to a multitude of sanctions Russian suppliers have redirected almost all their exports to Asia, making offers almost 40% as domestic demand is weak.

In a recent letter by the Association of Large Steel Producers (PALSP) to Syed Muhammad Tariq Huda (FBR) Member (Customs-Operations), the association has urged relevant authorities to strengthen mobile patrolling on the country’s borders to ensure strict vigilance on smuggling of steel bars. The association has further demanded, that warehouses and retailers concluding operations without sales tax invoices should be identified and taken action against as these practices are destroying the domestic industry.

In the third quarter of 2021 EU, apparent steel consumption increased for the fourth consecutive time in a row (+14.3%), albeit easing with 36 million tonnes compared to 40 million tonnes in the second quarter. Recovery is expected to continue but at a moderate rate and is subject to considerable uncertainty, including the ongoing energy crisis, until at least mid-2022.

Indication for hot-rolled coil in Asian markets reached $830 per tonne CIF towards the end of last week. Prices have risen sharply since mid-February adding at least $30-35 per tonne and continuing to grow. Meanwhile, deals concluded a month earlier were heard not exceeding the range of $740-750 per tonne CIF.

The Kanto Tetsugen's export scrap tender was concluded for a total of 10,000 tonnes of scrap in February. The winning bid in Japan's monthly tender for H2 scrap for export, held last Wednesday, rose by $42/t on month at Yen 55,850 per tonne FAS for 5,000 tonnes, according to the auction organizer the Kanto Tetsugen, the alliance of scrap dealers around Tokyo. The runner-up bid came at Yen 55,840 per tonne FAS. It is expected that the shipments for scrap will be to , however, there was no immediate clarity on where the cargoes were heading, with mixed market chatter suggesting they were destined for or Vietnam, with the parcels expected to sail by the end of March.
