Believe in yourself.

You are capable of great things.

Our brains are only used 8% of the time.

If there’s something you’ve not done before, there’s no reason why you cannot do it.

Just believe.

And remember, there was a time you couldn’t do what you now can.

If you think some of your past experience is futile and shouldn’t appear on your CV, consider first whether it would add benefit to the job you’re applying for.

So often a client will talk through a job opportunity; then show me their CV and covering letter and they do not align. Or a client will send a multitude of different CVs to a wide range of unrelated roles; in a scattergun approach.

Be in control of your skills.

Know them.

Know the benefits they bring to an organisation.

Take time to consider which you actually want to continue doing, or using.

Acknowledge soft skills as well as the ‘hard’ practical skills. Being personable, a good listener, being a leader, good at negotiation, networking, connecting people, are all examples of soft skills that are often forgotten.

Skills can be acquired, mastered, and re-applied.

One of the first questions you need to ask yourself when considering a new job is: What is the vision?

Job hunting is not just about an employer choosing you, it's about you choosing an employer. Being proactive is more likely to land you a role, and one you will enjoy.

Consider what is realistic to work around your lifestyle:

How many hours can you work?
Can you travel?
Can you work evenings, weekends?
Would you need to work in the office, or would you prefer to work from home?

Consider the type of company where you want to work:

A start-up, a large multinational organisation, a smaller yet established business?
Do you need to interact with colleagues or work alone for results?
Are structure or procedures important to you?

Consider what you want to achieve:

Do you want to have measurable targets to reach?
Do you want to master new skills?
Are you keen for promotions within a company?
Do you want to nurture others, mentor or coach them?

Investing your time in establishing your vision, will pay off when it comes to your job hunt.

It’s so easy to get sucked into some of the negativity on line. Yet in amongst it all there is much positive news, and we need to see more of it.

It’s also easy to sail through a year and think ‘what the hell did I accomplish?’ and especially so if you’re the competitive type.

Yet reflecting back and searching for wins, big or even tiny, is great for the soul; for your mental health and for your development. It also allows you to see what you can build upon, reminding you of skills you may well have forgotten.

“I haven’t been seventeen for very long. But I will say, aside from the schoolwork, it’s really a wonderful time. I have the freedom to go wherever I want to go, but not a ton of responsibility. I can walk out of my house with my dog, and go for this walk, and not worry about much more than getting back home. I do need to finish a 650-word personal statement for my college applications. It’s not an easy thing-- to describe yourself in 650 words. I don’t really know who I am yet, though I am growing more comfortable with not knowing. At least that means other people aren’t defining me either. When I look at older people I admire, to be honest, I do define them a bit-- by their careers, and accomplishments. I guess it’s just the easiest way to understand them, because I haven’t experienced much of being older. When you’re seventeen you haven’t done much. But there’s also freedom to that. Because there’s not much to define you by, other than the moment.”
