Subcultural Theory: Traditions and Concepts

Subcultural Theory: Traditions and Concepts Following from the 2011 book, this site is a place for notes about contemporary subcultural phenomena around the world.

Subcultural phenomena continue to draw attention from many areas of contemporary society, including the news media, the marketing and fashion industries, concerned parents, religious, and other citizen groups, as well as academia. Research into these phenomena has spanned the humanities and social sciences and the subcultural theories that underlie this work are similarly interdisciplinary. Subcul

tural Theory brings these diverse analytic issues together in a single text, offering readers a concise discussion of the major concepts and debates that have developed over more than eighty years of subcultural research, including style, resistance, deviance, identity, space, and media. The text emphasizes methods, concepts and analysis rather than mere descriptions of individual subcultures, all the while ensuring readers will gain insight into past and present youthful subcultures, including mod, punk, hardcore, straightedge, messenger, goth, riot grrrl, hip?hop, skinhead, and extreme metal, among others. The book closes with an assessment of the subculture concept as a viable and useful sociological tool in comparison with other fields of study including social movements and fandom.

Fascist metal subcultures appear to be just as active in Southeast Asia as they are in the 'West.' Luckily, anti-fascism is keeping pace.

A festival featuring 10 right-wing “Malay power” bands scheduled to take place in the northern Malaysian city of Ipoh next month has been cancelled amid protests. The Malay power movement is made up of neo-Nazi bands who want to rid Malaysia of everyone who is not ethnically Malay and stop immig...

A recent article that reviews a lot of recent literature in and around youth/subculture studies. I organize the discussion around four salient topics in subculture studies: (1) identity and identification, (2) centre and periphery, (3) social media, and (4) history

Empirical studies of youth cultures and subcultures continue to flourish alongside active theoretical progression and debates within and across a variety of int...

Hot off the press--the first of two articles that I've collaborated with students on. http://jce.sagepub.com/content/45/1/34. You can find a pre-production for free on my academia webpage (https://nanyang.academia.edu/PatrickWilliams).

This article theorizes and performs an analytic and evocative autoethnography about participation in the Rude Boy subculture in Singapore in the 2000s. Relying on critical pedagogy and a performative conception of subcultural theory, we analyze the second author’s past self as a Rude Boy through a c…

Reposting from KISMIF's page.

On the one hand, we again see the potential for social media to disrupt dominant cultural discourses. On the other hand, how long until radical Islam starts enacting violence against metalheads, who are a problem to all conservatives?

Thanks Ross. A nice satirical piece that helps make obvious some of the gender dynamics that continue to affect hardcore music cultures/scenes.

Suffrage, a new all-male hardcore band, is a group of radical-minded men intent on proving that guys can rock, too.

Similar to how straight edge was labeled as a domestic terrorist group in the US in the fallout of 9-11, in no small because to help "protect" the winter Olympic games in Salt Lake City from unwanted public demonstrations by anti-consumerist, anti-drug, DIY, eco-vegans.

Just when you thought the Australian government couldn’t be more out of touch with young people, music, and just about everything and everyone else, they go ahead and outdo themselves in the most cartoonish and extreme (no pun intended) way possible. The Aussie government has used an environmental a…

Media-produced subcultural phenemena never die? I'm torn between being a sociologist here and unpacking what this might mean in terms of subcultural theory, and just being a Warriors fan and gobbling it up. I think for now I'll just be a fan....

Cast members of 1979 cult classic "The Warriors" reunited at Coney Island for one last war party.
