Sierra Leone Records Breakthrough in Maternal and Child Health.
β
β*FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE* β *Sierra Leone has recorded a major breakthrough in maternal and child health*, with *maternal deaths reducing by 30%* during the *first 150 days of the Ministry of Healthβs "300 Days of Activism Campaign"*.
β
βThe campaign, *launched in March*, focuses on achieving *Zero Maternal Deaths, Zero Child Deaths, and Zero Zero-Dose Children*.
β
β*According to the Ministry:*
β1. *Child deaths have declined by 14%*
β2. *79% of children who had never received any vaccination* have now been *identified and immunised*
β
β*Health Minister Dr. Austin Demby* described the progress as a sign of what can be achieved through *strong coordination, data-driven interventions, and commitment* from health workers and communities.
β_βThis kind of trajectory has not been seen anywhere in the world,β_ Dr. Demby said.
β
βHowever, officials say *more work remains, especially on child mortality*.
β*Dr. Francis Moses* noted that child deaths are *not declining as quickly as expected*. New measures, including *rapid reviews of every child death at health facilities*, are being implemented to *identify causes and improve responses*.
β
βThe Ministry says it will *continue strengthening interventions* against major causes of maternal and child deaths, including: *Bleeding, Sepsis, Hypertension, Malaria, Pneumonia, and Diarrhoea*.
