The Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, H.E. Gen. Charles Madut Akol, on Saturday returned to the State capital, Aweil, following a month-long official visit to Juba during which he engaged with the National Leadership and various government institutions on matters affecting the State.

During his stay in Juba, Governor Madut briefed the national leadership on the general security, humanitarian, and development situation in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, while also seeking urgent support to address the growing humanitarian needs of returnees, refugees, and other vulnerable communities across the State.

The Governor further held consultations with several national ministries, institutions, and partners aimed at strengthening coordination, collaboration, and service delivery in key sectors including security, infrastructure, health, education, and agriculture.

Upon his arrival at Aweil Airport, Governor Madut was warmly received by senior State officials led by the Deputy Governor, Hon. Tong Lual Ayat, alongside the Speaker of the State Transitional Legislative Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abuk Jiel Dhieu, members of the State Cabinet and Independent Commissions, Heads of organized forces and security organs, as well as members of the public.

A police officer who allegedly brutally beat a rickshaw rider on a tarmac road in Juba on Tuesday has been arrested.

The officer reportedly attacked the rider after he allegedly hit and broke his vehicle’s side mirror.

Police spokesperson Maj. Gen. Daniel Justin confirmed the arrest, saying the police leadership has strongly condemned the officer’s actions, noting that he is entrusted with protecting the public.

He added that the suspect will face the full force of the law.

Struggle pays as Abuk Garang enters university with 300 SSP, signs up from Department of Economics

When Mary Abuk Garang Yel enrolled in the University of Bahr El Ghazal, she said she was only given 3,000 SSP, not because her family didn't want to sponsor her, but because that was all they could afford.

Confused about what to do with 3000 SSP in 2021, Abuk decided to sell homemade cookies, a business from which she generated some money to pay tuition fees in her first year.

“There was no money but I tried to struggle to acquire an education that would help everyone in my family. I still remember when my father encouraged me to achieve my goal although we didn't have the resources to sponsor my education,” she recounted.

Before being admitted to the university, Abuk's parents were approached by a man who wanted to marry her, with a promise to sponsor her education after becoming his wife.

“Someone came to my family that he wanted to marry me but I refused because I was very young and I believed that I could struggle to pay my tuition fees.

I also hope there must be other people who can help me just as a human, not as their wife,” she said.

“Indeed, the Aweil Students' Association at the University of Bahr El Ghazal, found RichLand company and told them about my situation. This company later sponsored my education from the second year to the fourth year, a support that I am very grateful for,” she added.

Acknowledging every support from family and friends, she further encouraged her fellow female students not to give up in education, giving her hard struggle as an example.

Mary Abuk Garang, a former finance Secretary of Aweil Students' Association at the University of Bahr El Ghazal, narrated her story during the signing-out ceremony on Monday in Wau.
