South Sudanese man drags woman in front of oncoming subway train - both dead

At the Wandsbek Markt subway station in Hamburg on Thursday, evening, a 25-year-old South Sudanese man dragged an 18-year-old Iranian woman onto the tracks in front of a U1 line train. Both died following a crash with a fast-oncoming train.

According to police, the attacker is a man from South Sudan. Police believe the attack may have occurred as follows: The 25-year-old apparently waited specifically for an approaching subway train. At that moment, he went to the 18-year-old and grabbed her. Then he threw himself and her in front of the oncoming train. Both died at the scene.

25-year-old came to Germany in 2024. According to current information, the two did not know each other. The victim comes from Schleswig-Holstein and was apparently chosen at random.

According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, the South Sudanese man was reportedly said to have initially fled his home country for Kenya and lived in the refugee camp. In 2024, the man came to Germany via a UNHCR resettlement program.

The names of the attacker and the victim have not been officially released by the police.

The media reported that the homicide was committed by a South Sudanese man and that the victim was an Iranian woman who was randomly targeted. Both have died.
