Six Things You Must Do Before Sending Your Job Application. For Serious Job Seekers Only.

Most job seekers send the same application to every company. Generic CV and a copy-pasted cover letter. Then they sit back and wonder why nobody is calling.

I know the market is partly to blame. But more often than not, the process is the problem. I want to give you a checklist of 6 things you need to tick before you hit send.

(1) Tailor your CV to that specific job.

Not your master CV. A version that speaks directly to what that employer is asking for. Use the same language in the job description. Recruiters spend seconds scanning your CV. Make every second count.

(2) Write a cover letter that actually says something.

I know people say that recruiters don't read cover letters. But, if they ask for one, do not open with "I am writing to apply for the position of..."

Nobody wants to read that. Open with a hook. Show you understand the company's problem. Explain how you solve it. Three short paragraphs and you are done.

(3) Research the company properly.

Know their recent news. Understand their values. Be aware of the challenges they are facing. Weave this into your application and you immediately signal that you want this job specifically, not just any job.

(4) Check your CV for keywords from the job ad.

Most companies run applications through an ATS before a human ever sees them. If your CV does not contain the right words, it is filtered out automatically. Use the job advert as your guide and make sure the language matches.

(5) Clean up your formatting.

No graphics, multiple fonts, or multiple pages life story. Simple, clean and under two pages. A CV that is easy to read always beats one that is trying too hard to impress.

(6) Prepare a follow up message.

After applying, send a short professional message. Not desperate. Not lengthy. Just a brief note expressing your interest. Most candidates skip this entire.
