His Excellency, President Salva Kiir Mayardit, has called for greater momentum in strengthening South Sudan's justice system, emphasising that an effective legal framework is essential to safeguarding peace, protecting citizens' rights, and advancing national development.

Phone, internet costs rise as NCA approves tariff adjustment

South Sudanese will pay more for phone calls and internet services from Friday after the National Communication Authority approved a phased telecommunications tariff adjustment, saying the move is needed to keep mobile networks operating amid mounting economic pressure.

The adjustment takes effect at midnight on June 26. The NCA said the decision followed consultations with the Ministry of ICT and Postal Services, Parliament, mobile network operators and civil society after operators warned that inflation, depreciation of the South Sudanese pound and shortages of foreign currency were threatening the sector's sustainability.

“This is not a tariff increase,” the NCA Director General Rizig Dominic said during a press conference in Juba. “The underlying prices have remained unchanged for the last eight months.”

The authority said the international benchmark for voice calls remains $0.04 per minute, equivalent to about SSP 181 at the Bank of South Sudan's official exchange rate. However, officials said MTN, Zain and Digitel collect revenue using an exchange rate of about SSP 4,526 per U.S. dollar but must purchase foreign currency from commercial banks at rates of around SSP 27,000 per dollar to pay for imported equipment, software licences, satellite capacity and network maintenance.

The NCA said the approved adjustment is the minimum required to help operators absorb part of the exchange rate gap and avoid shutting down network sites, particularly in remote areas. The authority said it will monitor the implementation and review the measures as economic conditions change.

A treatment centre for Ebola patients in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has been set ablaze after the death of a suspected Ebola patient. Relatives reportedly forced the removal of the body at Rwampara General Hospital despite objections from medical staff.
