MP Lual warns Ezra against defying presidential order

MP Stephen Lual Ngor has warned power company Ezra after it appeared reluctant to implement President Salva Kiir’s recent decree.

Lual said any move to delay or defy the presidential order is a direct challenge to the authority of the state.

“Presidential orders are binding and must be implemented immediately. No company is above the will of the state,” he said in Juba.

He stressed that electricity is crucial for citizens and national development, warning that government will not hesitate to act against any defiance.

“The supreme interest of the people of South Sudan guides our actions. Any attempt to undermine presidential authority will not be tolerated,” he added.

Ezra Blocks Tariff Reduction Despite Presidential Order

Ezra Power, the main shareholder in Juba Electricity Distribution Company (JEDCO), has declined to enforce the President’s directive on lowering electricity tariffs, arguing that the order is not sufficiently clear.

In a letter addressed to JEDCO’s Managing Director, Wondimu Tenkir, the company instructed that operations should continue under the current contractual terms until further consultations are held with the Ministry of Energy and Dams, along with the South Sudan Electricity Corporation.

Ezra noted that it is seeking dialogue to better understand the foundation and implementation process of the directive, while also protecting its investment interests. As a result, the government’s plan to reduce power costs for residents of Juba faces delays.
