Do you think branding is overrated? Our Chief Inspirer, Dennis, evoked some thoughts on branding - it’s more than ‘just’ a label. Here’s some food for thought:

A brand is a signal—
A shortcut that tells you what to expect.

There’s been a lot of debate lately questioning the value of marketing and branding, with some suggesting that brands are overrated. A waste of valuable cheddar. A way to get you to pay more.

But here's the thing: brands are far more than the products behind the label. They carry a meaning that has been invested in and cultivated. Not all beers (and banks or beans) are created equal. They may all have hops and yeast, but that's where the similarities end.

Brands convey both physical and emotional properties to their users, like premium quality, assurance, satisfaction, and agency—things that hold value.

A brand is a commodity dressed in meaning, identity, and emotion. It transforms something purely functional into something memorable, aspirational, and even cultural.

As Howard Schultz of Starbucks once said, "If people believe they share values with a company, they will stay loyal to the brand." This loyalty stems from the emotional connections brands create—something commodities alone can’t do.

Commodities serve a functional role, but they can’t communicate values beyond their physical properties. Brands, however, signal meaning. They offer stories, emotions, and a sense of belonging. In a marketplace overflowing with choices, branding is what transforms "just another option" into "the one for me."

That’s the true value of marketing and branding—it gives commodities life, purpose, meaning, and most importantly, value.
