Fact 1
Robert Koch was born near Hanover, Germany on December 11, 1843.

Fact 2
He began his career writing books on the theory that infectious diseases were caused by living microscopic organisms.

Fact 3
In 1850, a French researcher, Casimir Joesph Favaine found the first case of anthrax when Robert Koch had already researched on the topic. He graduated in medicine in 1866 from the University of Gottingen.

Fact 4
From 1870 to 1871 71 Robert Koch served as a surgeon during the Franco-Prussian War and became district surgeon in Wollstein, Germany, where he built a small laboratory.

Fact 5
In 1877 he published an important paper on the investigation of anthrax.

Fact 6
In 1882 Robert Koch discovered tuberculosis and started studying the subject

Fact 7
From 1891 to 1899 he studied a variety of diseases of humans and animals such as leprosy, rinderpest, bubonic plague, Texas fever and malaria and travelled all over the globe.

Fact 8
In 1901 Robert Koch firmly believed that infection of human beings by tuberculosis was rare and did not warrant drastic measures. In 1905 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine for identifying the bacterium that causes tuberculosis.

The Koch crater satellite is named after him. The Robert Koch prize and medal is named after him and given to outstanding microbiologists.

The most well known eagles are the Bald eagle and the Golden eagle which are found in Northern America. The Bald eagle is not actually bald.

They have very unusual eyes which are large in proportion to their heads. Their large pupils enable them to spot prey while soaring high above.

Fact 3
They have muscular legs and powerful talons with which to seize prey.

Fact 4
They build their nests on high cliffs or in tall trees. They repair these nests every year and over a period they make very large nests.

Fact 5
The female is larger than the male and lay up to 4 eggs one day apart. The eggs hatch also one day apart. The first hatchling normally attacks the later born and may even kill them. The parents do not interfere.

Eagles hunt and scavenge and bring food to the nest. They feed the chick when the female is off the nest on other jobs.

Fact 7
The fledglings leave their nest within 9 or 10 weeks. They are forced to practice to fly by the adults.

Eagles will defend their territories or attract a mate by putting on spectacular aerial displays.

They attempt death-defying swoops and locking talons with another bird and free-falling in a spiral.

Eagles do not move from their territories if there is water and food nearby.

There are about 70 species of sting rays in the world and they are related to sharks.

Fact 2
They are carnivores and feed on animals, crustaceans, mollusks, oysters, crabs, snails and some species of fish

Fact 3
Sting rays are found in shallow brackish or salt waters mainly in warm climates.

Fact 4
They spend most of their time motionless buried in the sand.

Fact 5
Their eyes are located on their dorsal side while their nostrils mouth and gill slits are located on the ventral side which is referred as the underbelly.

The life span of stingrays is about 15 – 25 years. A group of stingrays is commonly referred to as “fever” of stingrays.

The stingray’s tail is located with a barb that can be serrated and sharp. This venom can be dangerous to humans and was used as an anesthetic in ancient Greece.

Stingrays are docile and will attack only if they are attacked or threatened. They grow their sting once it is shed.
