Qualities and Skills of a Charismatic Leader
There are five qualities that charismatic leaders demonstrate, namely:
• authenticity;
• strength of personality;
• benevolence;
• purposefulness;
• persuasiveness.
Qualities are ingrained patterns of behavior, thought, and expression of emotion. They require certain skills if you want to be effective and efficient. Each quality of charisma covers five key skills that charismatic leaders display every day.
• Leaders are considered authentic if they are able to show what they are, and also if they are open and principled and thus gain trust not only from their subordinates to themselves, but also among their subordinates to each other.
• Leaders, when they have strong personalities, draw people to them and enjoy special loyalty.
• Benevolent leaders help people to show their best qualities and feel special.
• Purposeful leaders are able to formulate tasks in a way that inspires and unites the team.
• Persuasive leaders communicate well and inspire the team with their passion for success. They also encourage discussions that spur innovation and progress.
Each group of skills allows you to develop specific qualities of a charismatic personality. Charismatic leadership brings enormous benefits to businesses. Employees of a charismatic leader:
• are greatly impressed by the leader's authenticity and therefore trust him wholeheartedly; they are also more likely to trust other team members; trust is an essential component of successful teamwork and cooperation;
• feel the leader's authority and are ready to follow him anywhere;
• feel their own importance, belonging to the group and security - as a result of the benevolence and affective behavior of the leader;
• know that they are being listened to and shown that their ideas are truly important; show more zeal in finding creative solutions and are ready to make every effort for a common goal;
• are unanimous in striving for a common goal and clearly understand their role in achieving it due to the purposefulness and persuasiveness of their leader;
• open to new ideas and continuous improvement, not afraid of changes on the way to the ideal;
• are highly motivated due to the persuasiveness of their leader and the clarity that he brings to all work processes; this is essential to the team's success as it encourages fruitful dialogue, innovation and flexibility.
Even if the leader has a rather modest level of charisma, his employees:
• feel respected (65% more);
• motivated (56% more);
• consider the leader as their inspiration (89% more);
• show initiative (24% more).
Bold claims, no doubt, but these stats are backed by solid research, which we'll take a closer look at in Chapter 36. Now imagine what 24% of your team and organization's productivity and performance looks like! How much profit will it bring? How much extra income? How will customer satisfaction soar? How much will the safety performance improve?
Thus, to achieve such results, even the most modest level of charisma is enough. Too much charisma at work can have a negative impact on the team. If you can raise your charisma to an average level, you will become noticeably more effective. Fortunately, anyone can learn and improve charismatic skills if they practice regularly.
