Sad story of Magai, awaiting to be killed, after he was sentenced to death without fair hearing.
Everyone needs to be careful when people around us are cautioning us of our negative attitude or character.
Murder is a great offence in most countries of the world, as anyone who commits murder might also be sentenced to death by law court.
Magai Matiop Ngong, is a Sudanese, who was just fifteen when hewas sentenced to death by a law court in South Sudan, some months ago.
Before his life changed the other way round, Magai loves competiting in running and also singing gospel.
He was still in secondary school, when he started having ambitions of helping people when he grows up.
Now, Magai lives in prison as a result of his mistake, and spends everyday living in fear of ex*****on for something that happened between him and his sister, when he was fifteen.
According to his statement in law court, Magai mistakenly fired his father’s gun at the ground to warn off his cousin who as trying to stop him from fighting with another boy in his neighbourhood.
The bullet ricocheted and hit his cousin in her stomach, who later died in an hospital.
Magai faced trial for murder without a lawyer. He was however, convicted and sentenced to death.
Our research shows that the death penalty is disproportionately used against poor and disadvantaged people.
According to international law, and South Sudanese law, sentencing a child to death is illegal.
But, fortunately for Magai last year, he was given access to a lawyer who has helped him file an appeal. He now finally has the chance to turn things around, if he finds mercy with the judge.
“My hope is to be out and to continue with my school.” Magai
