Laughing Kookaburra — Australia’s largest kingfisher, a ground-hunting predator famed for its echoing, territorial “laugh.” Often seen perched on branches or fence posts, it feeds on insects, small reptiles and mammals, and uses its raucous dawn-and-dusk call to defend territory and communicate within family groups. We're going to New Zealand! Our 11-day tour in October is officially confirmed. Traversing both the North and the South Island, blending exceptional birding with striking volcanic peaks, ancient forests, remote islands, and dramatic coasts. We’ll be looking for many of NZ's endemic birds: kiwis, parrots, wrens, wattlebirds, creepers, tuis, the strange wrybill and many more, exemplified by this ultra-rare Black Stilt. Sunbirds, like this Purple-rumped Sunbird, are the eastern equivalents of hummingbirds: their main feeding habit is to extract nectar from flowers. They don't usually hover, though.
