I’ve been shooting out at the Effingham skate park for years now. Many times photographing the Ham City Jam. It was always one of my favorite sessions.

It’s been so cool to watch it slowly grow into what it is today.

The new concrete sections are a big step, but they’re also the result of a lot of time and effort behind the scenes. A LOT! But man, is it looking good or what?!

If you’ve been around since the early days, you’ve seen the change.

Outside of The Office and Parks and Rec, I don’t watch much tv shows. But Drive to Survive, the Netflix docu series on F1? I’m all about it. Maybe it’s the photographer in me, but I love the behind the scenes angle showing some of their setup. These video light softboxes are massive.

It’s also a great visual on just how complex the lighting setup for a simple headshot interview is. It’s not just a light. It’s a very soft light on the full body, a light to the right of the person. A reflector to the left. A rim light up top. And a light shining on the background.

This creates a very dynamic headshot but to the casual viewer, the final shot looks very simple and easy.

It also serves as a reminder that for truly great content, it’s not as easy as whipping out a phone and recording. A lot goes into even a simple shot.

Even after years behind a camera, there are still places that are hard to capture the way they actually feel in person. The Golden Gate Bridge being one of them. Call me uneducated, but I never realized just how fortified this part of the nation was. The amount of bunkers, launch pads, and tunnels was quite surprising to me.

Where’s a place you’ve been that photos just don’t fully do justice?

Once upon a time, every house seemed to have at least one big photo album somewhere. Usually on a shelf or in a closet.

Flipping through those feels different than scrolling.

As parents, I’ve noticed we tend to worry about outfits more than kids ever will. I mean, honestly, sometimes I’m just thankful they put clothes on.

Years later, nobody talks about the clothes. They talk about the smiles, the memories.

What detail did you stress about that didn’t matter?

After photographing weddings for more than 16 years, I’ve noticed something almost every couple says afterward.

“The day went by so fast.”

You spend months planning. The flowers, the venue, the food, the music. And then the day finally arrives and suddenly it’s over.

It looks like George Banks sitting in his empty house wondering where the day went in Father of the Bride. 😁

I think that’s why photographs matter so much for weddings. They slow everything back down.

If you’re married, what’s one moment from your wedding day you still remember clearly?

Scrolling through photos isn’t the same as holding one. Printed photos cause you to pause and remember the moment. A few times over the years I delivered couples their wedding album and photographed them looking through and reliving the day. The power of an image. I love it!

Do you print your photos? If not, why not?

Many years ago, I had a family tell me, "I don't want people to look at our pictures and say, 'Wow! They clean up nicely.' I want them to see our pictures and say, 'That is for sure them as a family!'"

There's storytelling in a picture with motion or a little bit of chaos.
What as being said?
What did he do?
Why is she laughing?

It's not the polished pose or photoshopped smiles on everyone that pulls people in, it's the moment. That's the power of photography.

At almost every wedding, there’s a quiet moment before it all starts. No music. No announcements. Just stillness. The best part, in my opinion, is that most guests never see it.

When people look at a home listing online, they decide within seconds whether it’s worth seeing. Would you agree? I’ll look at house listings for fun (a weird hobby maybe), and it’s true. That first thumbnail determines whether I will view the listing.

Today we celebrated Callum’s first birthday!! It cannot already be a year since he was born. It doesn’t seem real. After a little party with the family, we went on an adventure to Lake Shelbyville. We were blown away by how low it was. To explore areas that were at one point over our head in water was mind blowing. It was cool to explore such places while they are exposed, and also very eye opening and troubling at the drought condition we are in. But focusing on happy times and celebrating the big ONE with Callum!
