New Tax Breaks for Self-Employed & Small Business Owners in 2025!

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (signed July 2025) just made life easier for the self-employed, sole proprietors, freelancers, gig workers, and small biz/LLC owners. These apply to your 2025 taxes (filing now in 2026) and beyond.

Here are quick, simple highlights, because who has time for tax jargon? 😎

1. 20% Qualified Business Income (QBI) Deduction.
Perfect for most self-employed, tradespeople, landlords, and pass-through LLCs (some services have income caps).
⏺️Deduct up to 20% of your business profit straight off your taxable income.
⏺️Example: Make $50k profit? Potentially save taxes on $10k of it!
It's permanent now (was going away after 2025).
⏺️Starting 2026, get a minimum $400 deduction if you have at least $1k profit.

2. 100% Bonus Depreciation ➡️Full Write-Off on New Stuff!
Buy business equipment, trucks, computers, machinery?
⏺️Deduct 100% of the cost in Year 1.
⏺️Permanent for stuff placed in service after Jan 19, 2025.
⏺️No more slow depreciation. Which is great cash flow boost when upgrading your gear!

3. Section 179 Expensing ➡️ Doubled Limits!
Awesome for small businesses grabbing tools or office upgrades fast.
⏺️Immediately deduct up to $2.5 million on qualifying purchases (equipment, software, improvements).
⏺️Phase-out starts at $4 million in total buys (both numbers adjust for inflation).

4. Immediate Deduction for U.S. Research & Development (R&D)
It's huge for inventors, software folks, or manufacturers tinkering.
⏺️Spend on developing new products, apps, processes? Deduct 100% right away (no more 5-year spread).

These changes help prevent a tax hike and put more money back in your pocket for growing your business. Rules can depend on your income, business type, and specifics.

Understanding your taxable income is one of the smartest moves you can make during tax season.

When you know exactly what counts as taxable income, you’re in control, you avoid overpaying the IRS and make sure you get every dollar back that’s rightfully yours.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the main types of taxable income most people have.

- Wages & salaries (your W-2 income)
- Self-employment earnings (1099s, freelance, side hustles)
- Interest & dividends (from bank accounts, investments)
- Other reportable income (retirement distributions, rental income, etc.)

Once you clearly see your taxable income, you can...

1. Spot missed deductions that lower what you owe
2. Claim every credit you qualify for (EITC, Child Tax Credit, and more)
3. File confidently without leaving money on the table

This is exactly why working with a trusted tax professional makes such a big difference. We dig into your situation, ensure everything is reported correctly, and help you maximize your refund or minimize your bill with no surprises.

Before you file your taxes this year, you NEED to know these 4 new deductions that could put more money back in your pocket.💰

1️⃣ Overtime Deduction. Qualified overtime pay may be deductible up to $12,500 for single filers ($25,000 for married filing jointly), offering significant relief for workers with substantial overtime earnings.

2️⃣ Car Loan Interest Deduction. For a new vehicle assembled in the United States and purchased after 2024, you may deduct up to $10,000 of the interest paid on the qualifying auto loan.

3️⃣ Tip Deduction. Qualified tip income may be deductible up to $25,000, providing tax relief for service industry professionals who rely on tips.

4️⃣ Senior Deduction. If you or your spouse are age 65 or older, you may qualify for an additional deduction of up to $6,000 ($12,000 if both spouses filing jointly are 65 or older). This provides extra relief for seniors on their taxable income.

These deductions can make a meaningful difference, but eligibility depends on your specific situation and current IRS guidelines. I’m happy to review your return and confirm what applies. Feel free to reach out!

My number one question flooding my inbox right now as a Tax Pro is, "How much do you charge for tax preparation?"

Here's the transparent answer 👇🏼

My fees are based on the number of forms and the complexity of your return.

No two returns are the same. Whether you're an individual with W-2 income, a sole proprietor, an LLC owner, a small business with employees, a freelancer with 1099s, or have investments/rentals, each structure and situation requires different schedules, deductions, and attention to detail. That's why a flat-rate price wouldn't be fair or accurate.

Instead, I offer a discovery call so I can understand your specific needs and provide a personalized quote. Once your return is prepared, I'll confirm the final fee before anything is filed. No surprises!!!

FAQ: Can I file my taxes myself, or should I hire a pro?

The answer: Depends on your situation!

🛠️ DIY filing (using software or IRS Free File) works well if:
- Your return is simple. Meaning only one W-2, a standard deduction, and no investments or side income.
- You're comfortable with tax rules and have time to double-check everything.

Pros: Saves money, offers full control, and tools like TurboTax make it straightforward.✅

💼 Hire a professional, like me, if:
- You're self-employed (1099s, business expenses, quarterly estimates).
- You have multiple income sources, investments, rental property, or life changes (marriage, kids, home purchase).
- You want to maximize deductions/credits, avoid errors, or get audit support.

Pros: Expertise catches savings you might miss, accuracy reduces risk, and provides peace of mind, especially with complex rules.🛡️
