Sunrise looking over at Capitol peak 5/21/26. It all started the day before. I hiked 4 miles till snowline. From there I put my splitboard on for another 4 miles to Capitol lake (11,500ft) where I would set up camp for the night. The next morning I had a 3am start and 1,100ft to climb. After struggling up the icy hard snow on the steep pitch to the ridge line, I would transition to crampons and an ice axe for a spicy ridge walk in the dark. Climbing a ridge I’ve done many times before without snow was a whole new experience this time in snowboard boots and crampons. Being up high in the mountains for first light is something very special. Each time I leave with a learning something new. Each time I gain a deeper appreciation for the mountains.

Day 8 6/7/25: I woke up for sunrise next to Laguna Carhuacocha. What started out grey would paint the tips on the mountains pink for a beautiful sunrise. An amazing start to my second to last day on the trail. I finally was feeling refreshed after 60 miles and over 20,000 vertical feet climbed. I still had 22 miles and 6,000ft to go. I started the day out by climbing yet another pass over 15,000ft. The trail would turn into rolling green hills still surrounded by mountains tho a bit lower in elevation not capped by snow. Scenery that was still new to me and made for a very enjoyable walk to my next camp.

Day 7 6/6/25: After another my 4th consecutive night sleeping above 14,000ft, I would wake up to a 3:30am alarm. To my surprise I was feeling a bit better. I had 2.5 miles a head of me going up and over another pass over 16,000ft. After packing up in the dark I headed off to my most anticipated composition, Tres Lagunas. Another brutal climb. Hearing avalanches in the distance made for a unique experience. Would finally get to the overlook and was so blown away by what I saw. Yet another scene like no other. After taking about 100 images I was cold, tired, and hungry. I only had a couple miles to my next camp all downhill. The whole way down I was surrounded by peaks towering over me. I got to camp exhausted. I would set up my tent with the fly off and take in the warm sun dozing off after munching on some much needed food.

Day 6. 6/5/25 After waking up and taking a dip in Viconga hot springs, I thought I would feel a bit refreshed. This day turned out to be one of the worst of the trip. After another night sleeping right above 14,000ft I had 10 miles and 2,300ft of elevation gain ahead of me. Topping out at 15,300ft. I couldn’t seem to catch my breath and was moving very slow. This day really made me appreciate the little things as I struggled to push forward. I tried to capture the beauty around me though I was just trying to make it past the crux of my trip mentally and physically. I was determined to make it as close to the next highlight of my trip, Tres Lagunas. This meant pushing past Campamento Huayhuash and finding a flat spot higher up. This would give me a fighting chance to catch sunrise at the overlook of Tres Lagunas. I did catch a glimpse of a chinchilla for the first time. Also pictured my camp from night 5 and a much needed morning hot springs soak.

Day 5. Woke up at 14,00ft feeling a bit better tho today would be tough. I had 11 miles and 2 passes ahead of me both being over 16,400ft. What most would split in 2 days I had the great idea to tackle in 1 knowing my next camp was at Viconga hot springs. San Antonio pass being the first pass, had one of the best views of the trip. Getting there would involve a brutal climb of 2,000ft of gain in 2 miles up to 16,400ft. With a 60lb pack the lungs got worked. Sitting at the top I met a fellow American who was kind enough to throw me some actual cold medicine that would make the next couple days a bit more manageable. The rest of the day was tough. Descending back down to 14k and back up to 16k. I ended up getting to the hot springs after dark and getting right into my tent saving the hot springs for the next morning.

Spring scenes from Aspen, Colorado. The valley floor is becoming lush and green while snow still caps the surrounding mountains. Winter is still trying to have its last say but I’m ready for warmer weather and longer days ☀️

Day 4. Sleeping at 14,600ft is tough on its own. This camp would be the worst night of sleep on the whole trek as the worst of my cold took its toll. I would take it slow knowing I only had a few miles on the docket for the day. This part of the trek was very remote and a bit of a detour. It would involve only 5 miles and about 2k ft of elevation gain. Though I would top out at almost 17,000ft in the first 2.5mi. The views would be some of the most impressive of the whole trip. Being so close to these giants is something special. Even caught a decent size avalanche as the sun warmed the snow.

Huayhuash day 3 pt. 2
Finally getting back to piecing this incredible trek together. The end of day 3 was tough. The cold I came down with was progressing whether I liked it or not.. the low clouds that surrounded me opened up and reveled Rasac, standing at 19,742ft towering over me. I would set up camp at 14,600ft. I gave all my last bit of energy capturing the beauty around me before bunkering down for another night of sub par sleep.
