“Earnings growth rates for workers with vocational or associate’s degrees are on par with those of bachelor’s degree recipients, according to the Atlanta Federal Reserve’s Wage Growth Tracker.”

Going to college in the United States has long been considered the ticket to a higher-paying job. But the growing share of high school graduates who are enrolling in vocational schools instead of four-year programs may not be missing out on as much earnings potential as you might think.

Young people need a purpose, a direction in life, something to be a part of that is greater than themselves. As the skilled trades unions, we can provide a lot of that.

Men in construction are 4x more likely to commit su***de than the general population. As we begin Mental Health Awareness Month, it's time we address it and let our brothers know it's okay to talk about mental health. Joining the Union Up podcast is renowned psychiatrist, Dr. Daniel Bober, and Kenny Mullins, business manager of the largest construction union in the southeast to talk about how we can spot the signs of suicidal ideation on the job, how to address it and what we can do to help each other reduce the stigma of talking about it.

“…‘We want you punching in at this hour. We want you working without time away from your desk. We’re going to monitor you with your camera, and we’re going to monitor you by measuring your keystrokes.’ Without a union, you don’t have a voice in that process or the ability to put some guardrails around it.”

“Have Democrats done enough to support strong Labor unions, Bernie?” The answer is “no” they haven’t because despite the rhetoric, at the highest levels of government both the Democrats and the Republicans are in the pocket of big business and not on the side of the middle class.

We are told ownership gets the lion share of profit because it’s the companies that “take the risk”…the ideas and capital for projects that employ our people. Fair enough. But let’s not act as if workers don’t take a HUGE RISK every single hour of every day. Every time they step on that construction site, that manufacturing facility, that industrial facility. Every time they work in the extreme heat and cold. Every time an electrician deals with a power source that can kill them in a nano-second. Every time a steel worker works 40 floors in the air. Everytime a crane operator scales that mast. Everytime a sheet metal worker deals with material that can lacerate a limb. Everytime a driver unloads a heavy package. Everytime a pipe fitter works with equipment that can crash down on their head. Every repetitive motion over a 30 year career that renders their body tired and injured. Yes, there are safety protocols and job sites are safer now than even 10 years ago, but let’s not act like the workers aren’t taking the risk for the contractor to make as much money as they can. This is why labor creates wealth, not the other way around.

And these laws have their intended effect: They reduce the number of workers who belong to unions, reduce ...
