TLDR - Two tips that rise to the top for me...

Focus on benefits rather than features: "The audience does not care about all the stuff the product can do; your audience cares about how it makes them happier, more fulfilled, less stressed and higher-performing."

Be clear, not clever: "If your audience cannot immediately identify the problem your brand solves and how your brand helps them overcome that problem, you will lose them."'

Always validating to see how the guidance I provide aligns with advice from communication leaders. Click below to read 15 common communication mistakes and tips to overcome them.

While a high level of creativity is essential to doing your job, some approaches to writing that communications professionals commonly employ wonโ€™t get your message across in a clear and effective way.

Repeat after me: Capture it now. Figure out if or how you will use it later. Once you miss the photo, the soundbite, the moment, you can't get it back.

Pick ๐Ÿ‘ up ๐Ÿ‘ the ๐Ÿ‘ phone ๐Ÿ‘

Email and text messaging are innovations beyond measure, but some communications require the more personal connection of a phone call, Zoom, or in-person conversation.

Listen carefully as your customer, client, donor, or colleague speaks. You'll gain valuable insights that simply do not come across over text or email.

Tip: Walk potential clients through your proposal rather than just emailing it to them. The conversation provides an opportunity to connect with the client, emphasize the ways your proposal addresses their concerns, and express the qualities that make you the right person for the job. If you just email the proposal, it's likely they will go straight to the budget page and compare your proposal with others based solely on cost.

Speaking of proposals, when is the last time you had someone outside your organization review your proposal and communication materials? You'll be surprised with the improvement suggestions you receive from a critical set of fresh eyes.

I'm installing a kitchen backsplash as part of my first-ever home renovation.

I recently received the following in an estimate from a potential vendor: "Remove and install new backsplash. NO TILE OR GROUT OR GROUT CAULK. NO APPLIANCE REMOVAL OR INSTALL. NO WALL PAINTING OR TOUCH UPS OR MUDDING."

Hmm... Couple of thoughts here. I'm looking to understand what you will do, not what you won't do. Home renovation is an exciting and stressful experience. The excessive use of "no" does not excite me to work with this company or calm my nerves about the process. Additionally, using ALL CAPS does not clarify the information. Do you have a special backsplash process that does not use tile or grout or grout caulk or am I responsible for providing those materials?
