Directing is sometimes just as much about listening to trusted creative opinions as much as imposing your own vision. I have been working with Joe as a producer for almost 10 years, there have been a lot of shoots in those years. I have learned to trust his eye and also when to push back when I think I see something he does not. That has lead to trust which in the media business where people are constantly trying to edge other people out or around, is a rare thing. Trust the people who had your back when you were down, before you were anybody. Trust the people who raise other people up with them, who smile when you are successful and are not envious when you do.

Equipment envy is a powerful force in the video/film world. I have found myself more than once drooling over another shooters rig.

It happened again in Oklahoma when I was seeing the images that were coming off of Marcus’s C70. So crisp, so warm, such ease of use with built in ND filters, such a good camera.

Marcus sat down at my desk for a quick edit and within a few minutes was planning how he was going to get a hold of my curved 49 inch 240 Hrz 5k display.

In the end it is all but moot. The equipment rarely makes us a better shooter, editor or film maker. It’s not really about having the best equipment it’s about doing the best with what you have in your hand at the moment for the story the you are telling. Pressure breeds creativity. 🎥

Well, we have started filming a new documentary. It started with an idea back in early September, then it went through hours and hours of research, planning, phone calls, emails, zoom meetings, and tons of book reading. I have had so many projects get stuck here in this space of planning. But that is what a great team is about, when you get tired you pass the ball and let someone else make the goal. It is not about the individual win it is about the end of the game. Anyway more photos and videos to come.

“I have a hard time selling you!”

These were the words that rang in my ears as my partner looked at me in exasperation.

“ If I can’t sell who you are then how am I supposed to refer you to people?”

It was a good question. What was I, a “Filmermaker”, a “Cowboy”, a “Business owner”, a “Coach”, a “Writier”, his “Video Guy”, maybe a “Podcaster”, a “Virtual studio developer”, “Business strategist”, a “Cinematographer”, or a former “Professonal Musician”?

All of them were true each as true as the other. Different people knew me as an expert for different reasons.

Here is the rub, I am not the only one with this problem. I know so many people who hid who they are below the water because it is easier to define someone at a glance than in nuance.

Some people call these hidden tallents. I prefer to call them stifled identities.

The solution is acknowledgment I think, not just of ourselves, that is easy. It is acknowledgement of other people in your life that look simple, but their complexity lies under the water.

As a drone pilot Sometimes it is better not to be seen.

I have been flying helicopters and drones for a long time and every time fly up there is a good chance that if you are standing out in the open you are going to have someone, man, woman, or concerned Karen approach you and ask what you are doing.

I wish I could say they have all ended happily. So far I have been in 2 physical altercations, been threatened with being shot, beaten up, have the police called on me, followed in cars, had a lady spit in my face while I was flying, and call me a pervert and much worse.

I even had a foolish person try to put me in a sleeper hold when I was foolish enough to let them get behind me.

To be fair not everyone who approaches me when I am flying my drone is looking for trouble, a lot of people are just curious.

When I took this particular shot I had a guy stop on the side of the road and start throwing rocks at the drone. When I asked him why he said that it was a police drone and we were surveilling for big brother.

The look on his face when I brought the drone back, landed it, and put it in my car was priceless.

These instances remind me of how special we all think that we are, how the world and other people revolve around us.

I am certainly not exempt from this falsity. Most people are minding their own business and want nothing to do with you, or even care.

That is sometimes hard to swallow, but necessary if we are going to live the way we need to live. Unafraid of the people surrounding us and what they think.

The worst decisions I have ever made happened because I was pandering to what another person thought.

What would your life be like, if you did not care if people were watching you?

P.S. if you see a drone pilot flying leave them alone, 99 times out of 100 they are just doing their job besides it is dangerous to distract a pilot with a bird in the air.

Ranching is not an easy way of life. Romantic as It may seem and as loved as it is by those who choose to live it they pay a price each day for how they choose to live.

I grew up in this culture, this lifestyle and it calls to the deep places in my soul like a drum beat that masks the sounds of my heart. When I got a chance to film in West Texas for a series we could not pass it up.

It was magical in the best sort of way to have my wife who, growing up in Finland, had never been around or really seen this way to life. To her this life was exotic and exciting the same way I had gushed over different aspects of her culture that she found mundane at best.

The real trick I believe is learning to see your own culture and lifestyle through new eyes everyday. Other people’s prospective on the way you live , for good or bad, brings with it a reminder of what we are grateful for, what we take for granted everyday, and the price we pay to live the way we choose to live.

I HATE this shot. I hate how it is beautiful, but when I took it I did not feel inspired and it shows. I have sold it several times as a filler shot, but the story behind it is not worth telling.

It is a filler shot, meaning it will never be a shot that anyone would remember. How many hours in our life do we record filler shots, moments that will never be remembered. False moments...

I can remember the moments where I grow, learn, am uncomfortable, angry, sad, am happy, inspired, elated, filled with despair or joy. These points I remember. I am committed to living and taking shots worth remembering.

This shot almost did not happen it is Also my best selling shot of all time $$$.

It was late, I was tired and my crew exhausted. We had driven from Austen to New Orleans for a film shoot leaving at 2:30 am to get there on time. We had arrived checked in at the hotel and had been filming ever since canvassing the city for a list of shots our clients wanted.

The sun was going down and we were on the wrong side of the river. My crew asked if we could head back get food and go to bed early, we would be able to get sunset shots the next day. I thought about it... a lot. It seemed responsible and my feet and back were killing me. I told them I wanted to get one more shot.

We all piled into the car and found a bridge that led to the edge of the neighborhood where we could get a shot. The sun had just started to wink goodnight to the city when I flew my drone up in the air capturing a series of steamboat shots passing in front of the city skyline.

The next day it began to rain 🌧 and pour and we were never able to get those sunset shots again. However these series of shots went on to be in a bunch of national commercials a tv shows selling over and over again.

What opportunist in your hand today that you could miss tomorrow?

Deep in heart of Northern Sweden I heard a story of a plane from WWII sunk in swamp near this hostel that we stayed at.
It sat near an old abandoned railroad station the tracks splayed out from its side tracing their way around the lake. The area was riddled with swamp melt from the permafrost and it was in one of these swamps where the Skelton of a WWII plane was supposed to lie preserved and lost from time.
The locals showed us pictures and drew us a map to the location the owner of the hostel, a former Englishman, recalled to us the story of when he first saw it.
Unfortunately we did not have the luxury to hunt down the final resting place of this old bird, but it has remained in my mind a place of hidden and lost treasure tucked beyond the reach of man deep in the arctic circle.
