If you don’t show up on Google, you’re leaving money on the table; period.
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the first impression customers see before they ever click your website or social media.

Here’s how to tighten it up this week:

1. Claim or Update Your Google Business Profile

Make sure your business is verified and your details are correct, hours, phone number, website, address (or service area).
If Google doesn’t know you, customers won’t find you.

2. Add Fresh Photos

Google LOVES updated photos.
Upload 3–5 new pictures: your products, your storefront or workspace, you working, before/after, or customer favorites.

3. Refresh Your Service List

Add clear, simple services with descriptions so people know exactly what you offer.
This helps your business show up when people search for what you do…especially locally.

Right now, workers across Maryland particularly highly-educated Black women are being squeezed. Not just by temporary furloughs, but by structural pay disruptions, federal cuts, and an employment market that’s shifting under our feet.

📊 The Reality
• In Maryland, over 15,100 federal jobs have been cut since the beginning of 2025 the largest drop of any U.S. state. 
• These cuts hit especially hard in regions with large Black federal-employee populations, like Prince George’s County, Maryland, which has roughly 65,000 federal employees. 
• Even when employment is found after layoffs, many are under-employed with master’s level professionals accepting jobs that don’t match their experience or pay. 
• The unemployment rate for Black women in the U.S. rose from 5.4% to 6.7% in just a few months and while national, this trend is a warning sign for Maryland’s educated Black workforce. 
• With federal spending cuts and state budget reductions (including in higher education institutions serving Black women) the ripple-effect is real. For example, Maryland’s university system faced a $155 million cut, leading to layoffs and hiring freezes. 

🎯 Why This Matters for Educated Black Women

For many of us, federal and state roles became a route to upward mobility stable wages, benefits, retirement, security. But these cuts are stripping that back. For educated Black women in Maryland who hold degrees, certifications, and have invested in their careers, this is salt in the wound: We worked hard, played by the rules and now the rules changed without notice.

💡 What We Can Do Right Now
1. Start or Scale a Business
If your job is shaky (or you’re already facing a pay gap, furlough, or uncertainty), this is a prime moment to become the boss of your own brand. If you’ve been thinking about your side hustle as more than side income make it business.
2. Support Black-owned Businesses
Don’t just buy once invest your support, time, and network. When we circulate dollars in our own community and buy from each other, we build strength beyond what outside systems can give us.
