What's up this weekend?

It's Big Top Parade - Baraboo, WI weekend in Baraboo 🎪, so expect heavier traffic through town on Saturday. If you're going to the parade, get there early for parking.

Meanwhile, at Devil's Lake State Park, the first kayak tour of the year is Saturday evening; you'll need to pre-register for that one.

And if you were following our rattlesnake post earlier this week, you can follow up on Saturday at from 1-3pm for "Critter Corner - Snakes!" on the north shore beach by the Chateau. The park naturalist will be able to answer your questions and will have hands-on activities for the whole family.

Trails 🥾

Trails are in good shape. Expect some muddy stretches and downed trees from this week's storms, especially on the outlying trails. Use extra caution on the bluff stairways.

Weather 🌤️

Friday is the best hiking day. Sunny, near 79. Saturday starts sunny, but storms are possible after 1 p.m. Plan your hike for the morning. Sunday clears back out, near 71.

📅 Saturday at the park:

Free yoga on the South Shore lawn at 9 a.m. 🧘
Naturalist snake program at the North Shore, 1–3 p.m. 🐍
Guided kayak tour at 7 p.m. 🚣 — limited space, call ahead: 608-356-8301 ext. 140

Wednesday Weather

It's hard to guess what the weather may bring, but there's a lot of chatter about possible severe storms today. So listen to forecasts and watch the skies. Here are a few images from past storms at Devil's Lake State Park.

Timber rattlesnakes are being reported at Devil's Lake State Park again, which means it's a good time to review where you're most likely to encounter one, and where you're not. 🐍

Our rattlesnakes favor rocky, sun-warmed terrain. The East Bluff trails, the Uplands Trail, and the rocky areas above the lake are prime habitat: exposed ledges, talus slopes, good warmth, and cover. The open shoreline, beach areas, and campgrounds are not typical rattlesnake territory (not saying you'll never see one there, but not often).

Watch your footing on exposed rock and pay attention to where you put your hands when you're scrambling. If you see one, give it space and move back. They'll do their best to get out of your way if you let them.

One more thing: don't hike or run with headphones or music playing on these trails during the summer. You won't hear a rattlesnake warning you until you're on top of it. (I speak from experience here...)

If you see a snake swimming near the shoreline, it's most likely a northern water snake. Not venomous, but they will bite, and yes, it stings. 😬 If one is swimming toward you, it's not chasing you. You're in its way. Move.

Timber Rattlesnakes are a Special Concern species and a Protected Wild Animal in Wisconsin.

Abstract Views From the Elroy-Sparta State Trail.

The tunnels of the Elroy-Sparta State Trail are about 150 years old, and most of the time they're quite dark, which is why you must walk your bikes through them. But there's value in slowing down and taking time to look around to see how the light and color bounce around. Here are a few images I've taken inside the tunnels recently.

I'll place more info about the trails in the comments.

Morning thunderstorms gave way to a calm, cloudy morning at Devil’s Lake State Park.

Devil’s Lake State Park’s Steinke Basin parking area is open! That went faster than expected. 😊

Lots of trees down on the Elroy-Sparta trail near Kendall, WI., today but with the help of a rider with her own mini-electric saw (Seriously) and Randy from the DNR, the trail was soon cleared. 👍

And thanks to everyone who stopped traffic long enough to help us save a snapping turtle on a busy highway. You earned some karma points today.😉🐢
