AUTHENTICITY

Something that I have always struggled with is doing family photos. Not because they're difficult to light and photograph, but because striving for perfection is simply at odds with little kids running around. Moms often have an idea of the perfect family photo in their mind, and there's a kid out to ruin it and it sours the experience for everyone.

This week I had the privilege of capturing a family, but in a very different way. I didn't ask the kids to pose 90% of the time. We let the energy happen and I caught what was in front of me.

Often times these images are NOT flattering. They're not the perfect image in a technical sense. So what am I doing?

In the same way I strive to capture seniors perfectly in the light so you can see their true form, letting families play and be weird and silly is exactly what I always look for in a portrait: Authenticity.

These photos are not softened, or perfected in photoshop. They're unfiltered. They're an authentic portrayal of this family being themselves. It's beautiful. I have found the way I want to do family photos.
