When the institution built to hold abusers of power accountable faces accusations that a leader has abused power within its own ranks, how does it respond?

This week, the International Criminal Court (ICC) officially suspended its Chief Prosecutor, Karim Khan. The man usually tasked with prosecuting the world’s most egregious abuses of power is now awaiting a vote by member states on his future, following a probe into his own alleged misconduct.

The ICC was created to bring justice to victims and deter future atrocities. With its leadership accused of misconduct, its very legitimacy may be called into question.

It’s the oldest crisis playbook in Washington: get caught in a scandal, then hire a team to prove you didn’t *technically* break any rules.

Rep. Jimmy Gomez is currently facing a House Ethics Committee probe over allegations of misconduct. His public defense?

🗣️ “…my actions were consensual in nature and haven’t violated the law or House ethics rules…”

That sentence was the exact moment he showed the public that he was more interested in protecting his job than in repairing their trust.

If your communication strategy relies on proving that you didn't strictly violate the HR handbook or break any laws, your ethics are already compromised. True reputation management isn't about protecting the principal from consequences; it's about radical accountability.

When leaders use lawyers to answer moral questions, they automatically lose the room.

Yesterday, our founder and principal, Jared C. Meade had the privilege of joining Rodrigue SOFFO, CEO, RS Intelligence & Lobbying; Illka Gobius, AMIPRS, CEO, Cyber PR; and Pamala Proverbs, Ph.D. APR, ABC, managing director PRMR; and Vladimír Bystrov, managing partner at Bison & Rose, for a panel discussion, moderated by Mary Beth West, titled "𝙀𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨: 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙎𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙊𝙆?" at the Davos Communications Summit in Davos, Switzerland.🇨🇭

The conversations didn’t stay theoretical. They discussed what it actually means to define and uphold standards, when and how to call out bad behavior, how to navigate questionable clients and partnerships and the reality that in the era, there’s no passing the buck. What we deliver to clients is wholly our responsibility.

At one point, he pressed hard on something he thinks our industry has been too comfortable avoiding: 𝘄𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀. If we expect and need public , we must be willing to defend it by upholding the highest standards and by openly acknowledging when one of us falls short, consistently and publicly, even when it’s uncomfortable.

He also raised the question of licensure and whether it’s time for the profession to seriously re-engage in that debate for those who call themselves practitioners. That struck a nerve with some in the room and sparked several thoughtful, candid conversations throughout the evening.
