Empowering Transit is a mission-driven startup founded by a registered nurse and paramedic who’s spent decades on the frontlines of care. With deep personal and professional insight, she saw a persistent gap: safe, no-transfer transportation for wheelchair users and their families in the Lehigh Valley.

This brand was selected for our Quarterly Catalyst Project, where we donate one full-sized branding suite each quarter to a purpose-driven organization. Empowering Transit stood out immediately—rooted in lived experience, community care, and a clear mission to restore dignity and independence.

Our Design Goals
→ Human-centered: Focused on dignity, ease, and empowerment
→ Functional: Professional but never clinical
→ Flexible: Ready to scale across vehicles, uniforms, social, and more
→ Uplifting: A reflection of hope, motion, and momentum

Logo System
Primary Logo – Features a custom “O” with a wheelchair/power symbol, and the tagline Expanding Your World to reflect the brand’s mission.
Logomark – A circular “E/T” symbol that’s bold, modern, and ideal for digital and signage.
Icons – Includes a lightning bolt + chair mark to reinforce strength and accessibility.

Color Palette
Deep Teal – Stability, trust, professionalism
Accessible Green – Movement, health, growth
Bright Mint – Optimism, clarity, lightness
Visual mockups brought the vision to life—from wrapped vans to social graphics—showing just how impactful and empowering this brand will be in the community.

Project Impact
This identity suite was completed pro bono under our Momentum Makers initiative, which supports changemakers, startups, and nonprofits with discounted or donated creative work. Empowering Transit is everything we believe in—real impact, driven by real people.

Client: No Vacancy
Business Type: Roadside Motel
Deliverables: Full Room Collateral & Branding System
Theme: Retro • Elevated • Warm • Mid-century

Creative Direction
No Vacancy is a boutique roadside motel catering to the design-conscious traveler. Rooted in classic Americana and desert road-trip nostalgia, the brand is a warm blend of mid-century modern charm and contemporary luxury.

The creative goal was to craft a cohesive identity that honors the past while feeling unmistakably fresh and elevated. Every design decision – from typography to tone of voice – was filtered through this retro-modern lens.

Primary Logo | The hand-drawn cactus and clean sans-serif type contrast beautifully to convey both ruggedness and modern hospitality.
Alternate Logos | Inspired by classic neon motel signage, alternate marks bring flexibility across touchpoints like print, signage, and merchandise.
Color Palette | Desert-inspired hues—clay reds, sun-baked peaches, and rich browns—evoke warmth, nostalgia, and timeless comfort.
Typography | A combination of a script logotype with bold geometric sans-serifs balances playfulness with structure.
Logomark | The “nv” monogram and circular emblem nod to vintage motel keychains and stamps—perfect for swag and seals.
Illustrations | Hand-drawn elements (cacti, palm trees, mountains, road sign, classic car) inject personality and local flavor into the brand narrative.
Room Collateral | Branded matchbooks, pillows, keychains, and door hangers extend the experience beyond the lobby—turning guests into brand advocates.
Tagline | “ENVy Starts Here” | A double entendre where “envy” becomes a nod to the motel’s initials “NV” (No Vacancy), suggesting the brand is the place everyone wishes they were.

Photography | inspiration captures desert landscapes, golden-hour light, retro signage, and intimate interior moments. These visuals align perfectly with the brand’s emotional promise: spontaneous, stylish escapes.

Results
The final identity system positions No Vacancy as a distinctive stop on the modern traveler’s journey—a place where vintage charm meets curated comfort.

The Nike "Swoosh," designed in 1971 by Carolyn Davidson, a Portland State student, draws from the Greek goddess Nike’s wing, symbolizing speed and victory. Phil Knight, Nike’s co-founder, initially lukewarm, said it would “grow on him.” The logo’s minimalist curve, once criticized as a mere checkmark, became iconic for its adaptability, stretching across products without needing the brand name. Davidson later received a diamond Swoosh ring and stock, now worth millions. The Swoosh’s standalone recognition is rare in branding, evolving from a student project to a global symbol of athleticism and culture in a single, versatile stroke.

Carolyn received $35 for the logo and Nike also gifted her 500 shares of stock, later worth over $1 million due to appreciation, a diamond ring with the Swoosh, and Nike products, recognizing her significant contribution to the brand’s iconic identity.

- Serif fonts bring a sense of tradition, trust, and timeless professionalism. Think: books, law firms, luxury.
- Sans serif fonts feel sleek, modern, and minimal. Think: tech, startups, clean UX.
- Your typography choice directly shapes how people feel about your brand at first glance.
