There’s something to be said for annual and repeat events working with the same organizations as a photographer year after year.
These images are from another year capturing the Engineering Contractors Association Tournament at Hawks Cay Resort - a two day shoot encompassing raffle prize shots, check in, a welcome party, fishing weigh-in, and an evening gala in multiple ballrooms (shoutout Mark for helping me cover so much ground when it’s impossible to be in two places at once).
We get to know the flow of the event. We learn the nooks and crannies of the venue, which is helpful photographically, but also for all the behind-the-scenes choreography that goes into covering a large event well. We know which moments matter, where we need to be before they happen, and which images your team is going to need afterward.
And there’s a logistical side to event photography that goes well beyond making great photographs…
Need 200 portraits on a step-and-repeat in two hours? We know how to keep that line moving. Multiple things happening in different ballrooms at once? We figure out the coverage. A schedule shifts, weather changes, or something unexpected happens? We adjust.
Over time, guests start recognizing us, too. They’re more comfortable in front of the camera, because they’ve seen in years past that they know we’re going to make them look good, and the whole vendor team develops a familiarity with the event that makes everyone better at their jobs while still finding new ideas and new ways to photograph it each year.
