❓What do you think people most often misunderstand about how policies affect everyday life?
One of the things I appreciate most about being part of the Greater North Dakota Chamber is access to conversations like this morning’s discussion on North Dakota tax policy with Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus.
This kind of discussion ties directly to the work I do. I spend a lot of time thinking about how issues like these are understood, explained, and connected back to real life.
A few of my biggest takeaways:
North Dakota’s competitiveness is about more than one tax rate or one incentive. Businesses look at the full picture when deciding where to invest, expand, or grow.
Attracting new capital means paying attention not just to tax policy, but also to workforce, regulation, infrastructure, and long-term stability.
Workforce remains a real limiting factor for growth in North Dakota, even when other conditions are favorable.
Property taxes are often misunderstood. A common misconception is that they primarily fund the state, when in reality, they are largely used to fund local governments, such as cities and counties.
One point that especially stood out to me: good policy matters, and so does helping people understand what that policy means, why it matters, and how it affects their communities.
These are the kinds of conversations worth paying attention to because they shape business decisions, community growth, and public understanding all at the same time.
