Not everyone in the diabetes community is eager to switch to an insulin pump. In fact, some people spend years actively avoiding them.

That was the case for Sami.

For a long time, she believed pumps just weren’t a fit for her. They were too complicated and disruptive—"not worth it."

Then she came across information about the Sequel Medical Technology Twiist insulin pump.

Something about it felt… different. Simpler. More approachable.

Her transition wasn’t exactly smooth. There were learning curves, frustrations, and a fair amount of chaos in the beginning.

But what happened next might surprise you.

"Is diabetes making you ugly?" It's not a question most of us think about but ever since being cured of type 1 diabetes (T1D), Katie Beth Hand has gotten some surprising comments that she looks "glowy." More glowy than usual.

And yeah... everyone looks better if their pancreas is functioning properly. But that's not the best part of being cured! That's a tiny perk compared to making 199 fewer decisions everyday, not having to worry about CGM alarms or insulin shots, and so much more.

💬 How do you think your life would change if you were cured?

Before Katie Beth Hand was cured of type 1 diabetes (T1D), she carefully evaluated everything before each meal. Over the course of 13 years living with T1D, she had to make at least 200 extra decisions per day about simple tasks like eating, exercising, and sleeping.

But today, the only thing she has to worry about at mealtime is "what looks good?" This feels unimaginable to people with T1D—a true mic drop moment—but Katie is charting new territory.

In this episode of the Diabetes Nerd Podcast, she shares her current A1C, how she manages her daily life, which checkups are needed, and the process of "becoming undiabetic" after participating in Eledon's clinical trial to cure T1D.

One unexpected benefit? People have even started telling her she looks better! And yeah... that happens when your body actually starts doing its job and controls your A1C for you. 😉

Would you want a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D) if it meant you had to take immunosuppression drugs?

For many people with T1D, it's a no-go. Immunosuppression can feel like trading one bad set of cards for another.

But what if there were a cure that didn't require immunosuppression? Researchers at MIT are hopeful for this...

What happens when you can’t manage your child’s type 1 diabetes for them?

There are moments in this life that shake you. Moments that make you question everything you thought you were doing right. As a parent, you carry so much—and when something goes wrong, it can feel like you’ve failed.

If you’re raising a child with T1D, you likely know that feeling. Especially if diagnosis came early, when they needed you for everything.

In this episode of the Diabetes Nerd Podcast, Kylie Grimes shares the story of the day she called 911 for her child, what led her there, what she learned in the aftermath, and how she’s now showing up for other parents walking that same tightrope.

A noteworthy development in type 1 diabetes research.

Researchers at Uppsala University have transplanted gene-edited islet cells into a person living with T1D, and early results show the cells are functioning.

While still early, this work reflects continued progress in exploring new approaches to treatment and the potential role of cell-based therapies in the future.
