Across Northern Michigan, there are 8 Memorial Day weekend events happening, from historic reenactments and parades to car shows, arts and crafts, live music, a 5K, and a summer kickoff party by the water.

Some are free. Some are family-friendly. Some are perfect for making a day trip out of it. All of them feel like that first real sign that the season is changing around here.

If you’ve spent enough summers Up North, this photo raises your blood pressure immediately. 😭

You’re 14 cars deep behind a pontoon.
Nobody’s moving.
Every passing lane turns into a life-or-death negotiation.
And somehow the guy towing it still finds a way to go exactly 42 MPH.

Northern Michigan locals know:
the real vacation starts after you finally get around the pontoon traffic.

Tag the person who always says:
“We should leave at 3 PM Friday, traffic won’t be that bad.” 👀

🏖️ Hidden beaches of the 231…

Not every great beach up north has a packed parking lot and a line of tourists.

Some of the best ones are the places you find by walking a little farther, taking the quieter trail, or knowing which access point to try.

A few worth knowing:

• Good Harbor Bay
• Esch Road Beach
• Peterson Park
• Christmas Cove
• Magoon Creek
• Arcadia Dunes
• Norwood Beach
• Fisherman’s Island

Some are hidden.
Some are just underrated.
All of them feel like Northern Michigan summer.

What’s one beach we missed? 👇

Before roads, highways, and towns…
Northern Michigan looked very different.

This area is part of the ancestral homelands of the Anishinaabe, including the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi — often referred to as the Three Fires Confederacy.

Life here wasn’t organized around roads or cities.

It was organized around the land and water.

🌊 Waterways were the main routes
Travel happened by canoe along Lake Michigan and inland rivers — many modern towns sit along these same paths.

🌱 Movement followed the seasons
Communities shifted throughout the year for fishing, hunting, maple sugaring, and harvesting.

🌲 The land had a different rhythm
Daily life was shaped by natural cycles, not schedules or infrastructure.

And this history isn’t just something from the past —
it’s still part of Northern Michigan today.

Most people do M-22 completely wrong… 👀

They try to rush every stop
They try to see everything
They treat it like a checklist

…and miss the best parts.

M-22 isn’t about how much you see.
It’s about how you experience it.

Slow down.
Pull over more than you planned.
Pick a few stops and actually enjoy them.

That’s when it hits different.

👉 What’s one stop on M-22 you’d never skip?

Ever wonder what most people don’t know about Cadillac? 👀

It’s more than just a lake town…

🧊 It helped power an entire industry before refrigeration
🌲 It was once one of Michigan’s biggest lumber hubs
🌊 Its lakes are more connected than most people realize
❄️ It quietly becomes a winter playground
🎶 And the local culture runs deeper than you’d expect

Once you start looking at Cadillac this way…
you realize there’s a lot more history hiding in plain sight.

🪁 Best places to fly a kite in Northern Michigan?

There’s something about this time of year…
a little wind, a little sun, and suddenly you’re a kid again.

From wide open Lake Michigan beaches to quiet inland parks, the 231 has some perfect spots to let one fly 👇

🌊 Keith J. Charters Traverse City State Park
Wide open beachfront + steady winds

🌅 Sunset Park
Bluff views + sneaky strong updrafts

🌳 Cadillac City Park
Easy, central, and super family-friendly

🌊 Stearns Park (Ludington)
One of the most reliable wind spots

🌾 Veterans Memorial Park (Charlevoix)
Flat, open space — great for beginners

🌄 White Pine Trail (near Reed City)
Huge open stretches, fewer crowds

🌊 Elk Rapids Day Park
Small but scenic with steady bay breeze

🌲 Fisherman’s Island State Park
More rugged, more space, more wind

🎯 What makes a great kite spot (locally):
• Lakefront wind = cheat code
• Wide open space (no trees/power lines)
• Grass or sand for easy landings
• A little elevation goes a long way

👇 We know we missed some…

👉 Drop your go-to kite spot below
👉 Bonus: share a photo if you’ve got one
