During the Siege of Erebor (The Battle of the Five Armies), the last conversation between Bilbo and Thorin before hostilities break out is a tense, heartbreaking confrontation. It takes place at the front gate of the Lonely Mountain, right after Thorin discovers that Bilbo stole the Arkenstone and gave it to Bard and Thranduil to prevent a war.
The Setting
Location: The fortified stone wall built by the Dwarves at the Front Gate of Erebor.
Atmosphere: Cold, tense, and bitter, with armies of Elves and Lake-men gathered in the valley below.
The Confrontation
The Reveal: Bard steps forward and shows Thorin the Arkenstone, revealing they have the leverage to force a negotiation.
The Confession: Thorin wonders how they got it, suspecting a trap or magic. Bilbo steps forward and boldly admits, "I gave it to them!"
Thorin's Fury: Thorin is blinded by the "dragon-sickness" and obsession over the gold. He feels utterly betrayed by the Hobbit he had grown to trust.
The Physical Climax
The Assault: In a fit of rage, Thorin yells "You miserable hobbit! You undersized burglar!"
The Grip: He seizes Bilbo by the collar and lifts him over the ramparts, threatening to throw him down to the rocks below.
The Intervention: Gandalf suddenly reveals himself in the camp below, shouting for Thorin to stop and let the Hobbit speak.
The Shaming: Thorin shakes Bilbo in anger but ultimately drops him, telling him to leave and never return to the Mountain.
Bilbo’s Defense
The Motivation: Bilbo maintains his dignity, explaining that he did not give it away out of malice.
The Contract: He points out that he was promised a fourteenth share of the treasure and chose to take the Arkenstone as his share to buy peace.
The Departure: Bilbo climbs down the wall using a rope, leaving the furious Dwarves behind and joining the camp of Bard and the Elvenking.
