I swear I’m just painting a beach mural… 😅

Nothing suspicious here—just a tarp, tape, towels, and an emotional support brush lineup.

It started months ago, quietly—a mural proposal, just an email and a hopeful idea, not yet knowing what it would become.

An email, a submission, a hopeful idea sent off in September. Then time passed. Life moved. There were delays, a maternity leave, a pause that felt ordinary.

Until it wasn’t.

In January, the connection picked back up. The mural was approved. And in March, I began painting at Rose Haven—focused on color, movement, and creating something peaceful for the people who would pass through that space.

At the same time—without planning, without warning—my father-in-law became a resident there on hospice.

Two paths that had nothing to do with each other suddenly met in the same place.

I didn’t think he would see the mural. Mobility had become difficult, and it felt unlikely. But one day, they needed to switch out his chair and temporarily placed him in a wheelchair.

And he said, simply:

“Well, let’s go see Holli’s painting since I’m in this thing.”

So he did.

In the middle of everything—decline, uncertainty, goodbye—he chose to go see something I created. Something meant to bring calm and beauty into a place like that.

I had gone there to paint for others.

But somehow, at the exact same time, I was there for him.

And he was there to see it.

Somebunny stopped by the Rose Haven mural today… and picked up a brush 🐰🎨

Between waves, wild grasses, and a glowing sunset, this beach is coming to life—one painterly stroke at a time. And apparently, even the Easter Bunny couldn’t resist joining in.

Progress is happening… magic is building… and this hallway is transforming into something truly special. 🌅

Day one was all about laying the foundation.

Blocking in the sky, horizon, and ocean colors so the mural can start to breathe. A beach scene always begins with atmosphere — the glow of the sunset, the deep blues of the water, and the warm sand waiting for life to appear.

Next comes the storytelling.

Sea turtles, hatchlings, dune grass, a curious crab, and Adirondack chairs watching the sunset will begin to emerge over the next couple of days.

Murals are built in layers — just like the coast itself.

More progress coming soon.

An eye starts as simple structure — iris, pupil, light.

Layer by layer the color builds, and then one tiny highlight makes it look back at you.

That’s the magic.

The color wash is down.

The sketch has surfaced.

For this piece, I created a rubbing from a fragment of damask wallpaper — pressing its history directly into the canvas. Pattern becomes memory. Ornament becomes residue.

She emerges from it.

Not before.

Not during.

After.

This stage is instinct and atmosphere — letting the surface decide what wants to remain visible and what dissolves beneath the paint.

Every layer holds something.

More to come.

We found this antique tin tile at our friend Renate's Antique Gallery and I knew immediately it was meant for the studio.

It once lived on someone’s ceiling — part of the quiet architecture of a home. Rusted. Ornate. A little forgotten.

There’s something powerful about reclaimed materials. The history in the dents. The life in the rust.

This one is coming into the studio with me.
It’s going to hold something sacred.

Stay tuned.
