Can we all agree to retire the phrase, "Build it and they will come"? šŸ˜…

If only business worked that way.

Every other week, I get to chat with my friend Alison Ver Halen about branding, marketing, and the things business owners hear all the time that just... aren't true.

Our first topic?

"Build it and they will come."

Spoiler alert: building something amazing is only part of the equation.

You still have to give people a reason to find you, trust you, and remember you.

I'd love to know... what's a business or branding myth you've heard that drives you crazy?

Three entrepreneurs. Three different industries. One shared turning point: they stopped accepting 'fine' and started demanding originality.

I've watched this pattern repeat across my clients-the moment they invest in a brand that actually reflects who they are, the market responds differently. Not because design is magic. Because authenticity sells.

These three didn't just get prettier logos. They got clarity. Positioning. Confidence. And yes-revenue that proved it.

If your brand feels invisible or fractured or like it's apologizing for existing, that's not a design problem. It's a strategy problem. And it's fixable.

One of my favorite things about business? The people.

This week, two amazing women from two different states reached out because they were going to be in town and wanted to get together.

Obviously, I said yes.

The funny part? They each knew women in my own community, and one of my local friends ended up joining both evenings.

It’s wild how small the world can feel.

It also reminded me that the best part of business isn’t just growing a company. It’s building relationships with people who genuinely cheer each other on, make introductions, and show up.

Those connections have a way of crossing paths when you least expect it.

Here’s to good conversations, incredible women, and a reminder that your network really is one of the best parts of the journey.

Since my last post mentioned slowing down for summer, I thought this would be the perfect time to ask: what are your plans for Q3 and Q4? Summer is the perfect planning season.

This is a great time for a brand check in. Your business changes and evolves, and reflecting on where you’ve been and where you’re going will help you plan for growth now - not when it’s already here.

It’s a great time to start planning for the fall. Fall is event season (where are you going? Who do you want to connect with?), fall is growth season (new clients make their buying decisions moving into the end of the year, you know??), and instead of waiting for something to happen TO you, make something happen BY you.

Take a critical look at your branding and consistency: What needs to change? What needs to evolve? What needs to stay put yet still attract a whole new client base?

It’s a great time to check in, do an audit and start to create a new plan. We got this. Enjoy the sunshine friends.

Well, July is here and summer is in full swing. How is yours starting out?

Mine is great - the pacing has slowed a bit. I’m able to reconnect with former clients and get updates on their lives (check your inbox. seriously). It’s so fun to have a moment to be real with them and celebrate all the good things, in life and in business.

Summer creates space to reconnect, and be intentional about both business and life. Which are both my focus at the moment.

I’m really loving my new home, getting settled in and decorating with my Herbie by my side (see office decor). I may even be trying something new or paddle boarding, you’ll have to find out on future posts.

I’m also attending some great ProVisors events, still involved in the DES Board, and we are working on some things internally at CTC.

How are you slowing down and regrouping this summer?

Lead generation is job #1, right?

Maybe.

Let me make a case for brand strategy, since that’s where I live and I have thoughts. Shocking, I know.

Most businesses are chasing more leads before they’ve built an environment that earns trust, keeps the right clients, and gives people a reason to refer them.

That’s where the wheels fall off.

Brand strategy is not just a pretty PDF or a cute little mission statement you forget exists after the meeting. It’s the work that helps you understand who you’re actually trying to reach and what they need to believe before they buy from you.

In a brand strategy session, we get specific.

Not ā€œwomen ages 35 to 55.ā€

No. We go deeper.

Who is she?
What does her day look like?
What does she care about after 5 p.m.?
What is she tired of hearing?
What makes her feel seen?
What makes her finally say, ā€œYep, that’s the oneā€?

Those answers matter.

They help us build the bucket before we pour more leads into it.

The goal is not to attract everyone. It’s to attract the right people and create an experience that makes them feel understood enough to stay.

That’s why I love this work.

We’re not just making brands look better. We’re helping businesses become easier to trust.

Build it and they will trust you.

If we’re lucky, we’re constantly evolving as a person.

That happens in your business too. The business you started isn’t the same one that you have now.

The person I was didn’t use to go paddle boarding, but the person I am does now.
(Yes, we do have some water in Arizona. I’m not paddle boarding in a cactus field. ha!)

What does taking up paddle boarding have to do with business?

It shows me that new things are possible. New interests arise and I’m free to try them on for size. My mind opens up and becomes more pliable and creative.

If we’re getting literal here, it shows me that you must find balance. If you do not, you’ll fall. And if you do fall, you can simply climb back up and try it all again. Eventually, you find balance and stand on your own two feet.

I used to think I’d figure it all out. I was shocked when I realized that day would never come.

Now, I’m so grateful that it won’t.

I’d rather keep trying to balance, fall, get up and stand on my own two feet.

How about you? Got it all figured out or taking a dip every now and again?

Perception starts before you have even spoken a word. That’s just the honest truth.

Take me for example.

If you’ve met me in person, you’ve already decided something about me when you first see me. It’s not judgement, it’s just human nature. I bring a presence with me. Everyone does.

Mine involves a hat and a floral blazer. It’s not a coincidence. It’s a wayfinder and it’s setting the expectations when we connect. You know what you’re getting.

In fact, when I went to a recent event without a hat, I got some sh*t for it.

And, at another event, a woman came up to me in a hat and told me I was her inspiration for wearing it. How fun is that?

When it comes to business, this shows up as consistency, an expectation you intentionally set, and when you waiver that reflects the trust and credibility you’re building. If there is no trust, people won't invest their time in you.

If they don’t invest their time in you, can you really expect them to invest their money in you?

Figure out what expectations you want to set when you enter a room. Then set them. With your energy, presence and vibe. Then be consistent.

Perception is not about being fake. It’s about being intentional about how your brand experience aligns with who you are and what you represent.

I’m not saying you should wear a hat and floral blazer to all your events.

But I am saying that if you see me at an event in sweatpants you should assume there is something wrong and take appropriate action. Thanks in advance.

Picture this:

You sell orange juice. Delicious orange juice, of course. But, there’s a LOT of orange juice out there. You might say the market is saturated. In orange juice. Sticky.

To sell more orange juice, you want to make sure that your messaging is really clear. You want to differentiate your orange juice from the Tropicanas of the world.
So, you hit up your favorite AI tool and ask it for help.

ā€œWrite a paragraph to help me sell this orange juice.ā€

It’s gonna pop out some generic content, and it’s nothing specific to your brand. It’ll probably be fine, but nothing terribly exciting or specific or interesting.

Because, there is something special about your orange juice.

Do you make it from your garden? Is it a specialty? Is there a secret ingredient that your grandmother used? Do you have a breakfast restaurant that you’re trying to promote?

Well guess what?
Nobody will know ANY of that if you generate all your content with AI. Because your content will sound like everyone else’s.

We all know what orange juice is, but why is yours different?

Your messaging, if not done with intention and authenticity and with YOU fresh squeezed right into it, will hurt your conversions.

AI can generate content, but strategy, differentiation, storytelling, and brand identity are what make content memorable and effective.

Orange juice or not. It all matters.

PS, Simply Orange, we love you! Your marketing team is killing it, of course. But if you are in the market for any strategy, we are . Let’s do it.
