It made my week when I received a call from Dr. Andy Wallace thanking me for writing this article. I was honored to tell this story about him, his late wife, and the generous friends/colleagues who created a Duke University School of Medicine endowment in honor of the Wallaces. Plus, I got to interview a Nobel Prize laureate, something I have never done before!

Thanks to the support of R. Sanders “Sandy” Williams, MD'74, HS'77-'80, and family, a newly-established fund will provide support to laboratory-based research projects conducted by physician-scientists in the School of Medicine.

In honor of Veterans Day, I'm pleased to share this story I wrote about Lt. Col. Brie Vihlen, the commander of the Air Force ROTC at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Lt. Col. Brie Vihlen’s Air Force service has taken her to Afghanistan, the UK, bases across the U.S. and ultimately to commanding Carolina’s Air Force ROTC Detachment 590.

Next August, she will retire from the Air Force after 22 years of service.

I loved learning about the less commonly taught languages offered by UNC-Chapel Hill's College of Arts and Sciences. It's such a great way for Carolina to further its global guarantee to students. Plus, I learned five new way to say hello!

The College of Arts and Sciences’ departments and global centers are particularly strong in teaching “less commonly taught languages.”

So fun to find that the story I wrote about an apprenticeship program offered by UNC Finance and Operations is the top story featured today on The Well, the main source for UNC-Chapel Hill news, features, and events info.

A pilot program helps community college students learn carpentry and other trades as University employees.

Eric Muller explores questions of morality, complicity and ethics in his brilliant new book, "Lawyer, Jailer, Ally, Foe: Complicity and Conscience in America’s World War II Concentration Camps." It was my pleasure to write about him and his work.

As one of the leading scholars on the removal and imprisonment of Japanese Americans in World War II, Eric Muller has spent decades researching and writing about the injustices suffered by these American citizens. In his recent book, Lawyer, Jailer, Ally, Foe: Complicity and Conscience in America’...

I have always loved libraries so it was really fun to gather these recommendations from UNC librarians. Maybe you want to add some of these great suggestions to your reading/viewing/listening list!

The fall semester is over and winter break is here. Whether you want to curl up with a good book or share a movie with friends and family, the University Libraries has you covered.

Iheoma U. Iruka, PhD, is leading the way on promoting and supporting the healthy development of Black children and other children of color. I'm always inspired when I talk with her and get to write about the work being done by Iheoma and her colleagues at the Equity Research Action Coalition at the UNC Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute.

It’s been two years since Iheoma Iruka, PhD, a faculty fellow at the UNC Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG), launched FPG’s Equity Research Action Coalition. Since then, the group has taken big steps in its work to promote and support the healthy development of Black children ...

Like the rest of the U.S., North Carolina is facing a nursing shortage crisis. It was my pleasure to write about this for UNC Chapel Hill School Of Nursing and then have the piece reprinted in Well, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's news source for faculty and staff.

Already a problem, scarcity in the state will worsen, with demand exceeding supply by nearly 12,500 registered nurses by 2033, a Sheps Center study found.

Such a treat to write about Nomi Ellenson, who is a lovely person and a talented and compassionate photographer and writer. I wish I had been able to read her book when I was little.

It's always a treat for me to write about my alma mater's alums!

Ellenson co-authored the children’s book I Love My Body Because to assert “the inherent goodness of this physical form in which we move through life.”

Prevention science is an important element in addressing the factors leading to violence and substance use disorder. Researchers at UNC Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute are doing life-changing work in this area. And I am lucky enough to get to write about it.

In recent months, stories about school shootings and the opioid crisis have dominated the headlines. Diana Fishbein, PhD, director of translational neuro-prevention research at UNC Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG), contends that 30 years of prevention science research can offer....

My favorite part of doing this article about two amazing women whose work is focused on inclusion for kids with disabilities was learning how their commitment to the work is rooted in their personal lives. I wrote about that in the second half of this piece.

During its 20th annual conference from July 11 – 13, the BUILD Initiative will host three days of virtual sessions featuring the visionary work of leaders who are building early childhood systems that work toward racial equity and center families and providers. It was inspiring to talk with and write about three women who are doing important work in sustainability. The final line in this piece, from our fellow alumna Margaret Mead, remains timely: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world..."
