Fin.
Well to be honest, I was very nervous and anxious to get these stars on. Bending the stars just so. Painting them. Gluing them. Much easier on a flat surface.
Pleased with the way it came out. Wasn’t horrible.

Paint up is done. Sanding is done.
Time to assemble and then watch the magic happen. Although I do have to admit, at this stage, it looks pretty badass.

Not a huge update but did want to show the after effects of my distressing process.
The blade I was using in my jigsaw to carve the boards does so incredibly efficiently. So much so that it doesn’t leave behind enough nicks and cuts in the wood that give this flag the distressed look that I want to achieve.
So after everything is cut, I go back over the wood with my jigsaw again. Same blade. But this time, I twist the saw so the teeth of the blade will dig in and then I drag the jigsaw backwards across the wood.
The end result are these fine ridges you see pictured here.
Next step = paint and then sanding it down.

Starting to carve out the wave. This part is almost magical. I freehand the wind waves on top of the boards and then I draw the depth os the cuts on the sides, always leaving at least 3/4” of the board.
Then I start cutting and carving. I trace the wave pattern on the next boards and they all pretty much create themselves turning these blocks of wood into free flowing works of art.

Picking out lumber for a fresh order for a wavy flag.
Always a fun filled process to visit my favorite store. A store that can lead to unlimited directions and possibilities.
This trip?
Simple 2x2s to carve out the wavy bits, and 1x3s for assembling and holding it all together.
I love my job.

Odin’s Crate - Part 2
I started by cutting all my lengths for each piece out of 1x2s. Took a bunch of em. Dunno exactly. I’d estimate around 50 - 8’ers. Drilled them for the balusters and then assembled them by gluing and stapling the boards together. I planned it so that the fasteners would mostly be hidden by sight, showing off the beauty of the grain of the wood.
I had to make the four posts, because the only 4x4s I could readily buy were pressure treated. So I glued and clamped two 2x4s together (4 times) and left them clamped for a week. Then I ran them through the planet till they were 3x3s.
Once assembled I used I stainable wood putty that I’ve had success with before. I always add my end stain right to the putty and mix it up. Then I fill in all the gaps, cracks, divots, knots, fastener holes, sand it all down and then I stain all the pieces. All that putty basically disappears. If you don’t add stain to the putty, it really doesn’t stain well. I tried it both ways. I also noticed that if you add sawdust from your palm sander to the putty while mixing the stain, it also helps deepen the stain color in the putty.
After the stain was the poly process. And all of us decent woodworkers try for a nice and smooth, 3 coat finish.
It’s a long process.

Odin’s Crate.

We rescued a Dane mix and I was tasked with building him a crate. The crate really designed itself, but there were criteria the crate had to fit.
Big enough for a Dane.
Sturdy.
Must use the black metal balusters we already had.
Must have wheels.
(Because of its size) must be able to break down into individual pieces.
Have a barn door.
Have black hardware.
Started out with the size and pretty much from there the crate designed itself.
It ended up taking me 5 months to build. I really only dedicated time to it on the weekends, and several of those weekends I was unable to work on the crate due to family visiting and other events that came up. Would have loved to be able to dedicate more weekday time to it, but just couldn’t.
I am glad it is finished.
