It doesn’t roll anymore: why no one wants to hold the European Figure Skating Championships
Eight months before the start of the European Figure Skating Championships, it turned out that there was no one to conduct it. Hungary, which was scheduled to host the tournament in January 2024, has officially notified the International Skating Union (ISU) that it is refusing to host due to lack of funds. The main reason for the financial difficulties in the release was the rise in energy prices. Moreover, the country has long cut spending on second-tier sports, which include figure skating, which is beloved in Russia. Forbes.Sport tells why it has become so difficult and unprofitable to organize a continental championship
Budapest received the right to host the European Figure Skating Championships in 2024 in June 2021, and already in May 2023 it officially refused it. The statement appeared on the website of the Association on May 10. “The Hungarian National Skating Association withdraws from hosting the 2024 European Figure Skating Championships due to a lack of sufficient financial resources,” the statement said. The reason for the lack of funds, the Association called the "special operation" * on the territory of Ukraine and its impact on the economy and energy prices.
How much does it cost to host the European Championship?
As Forbes.Sport explained in the Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR), the expenses for the organization are borne by the International Skating Union (ISU), the federal government of the host country (in Russia, the Ministry of Sports allocated funds for tournaments) and the city.
The FFKKR has a fairly recent experience: in 2018, Moscow hosted the European Championship, and in 2011, the World Championship, which was given to Russia instead of Japan, where an earthquake had occurred a month and a half before.
