When Life Goes Off the Rails

It’s a sobering scene. One body lays on a stretcher, injuries unclear. A black sheet covers the other. Bystanders watch on, tense and anxious.

That’s the setting for our October calendar image. At first glance, one might think it’s the aftermath of an automobile accident. Yet the description on the back of the photo paints a more chaotic event:

“Crowds watch as one of at least 200 persons injured in the “L” crash at 47th St. is carried to an ambulance. All available ambulances, patrol wagons and fire equipment were rushed to the scene.”

What at first appeared to be an historic photo of a group of men being sworn in as Chicago Police Captains in 1913, turned out to be a bit more than that.

As it turns out when this photo started popping up in newspapers around Chicago two years later, it was due to the fact that many of these men were being accused of questionable police tactics and being "heavy handed" while interrogating crime suspects. In fact, one of them is actually featured in a rapper Kanye West song!
