A friend is “a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection.”
Since the time I first met Ricky Lewis about a decade ago, he’s only concerned himself with one thing during our conversations: “what can I do for you, Garner.”
When he asks, it’s done do with absolutely no expectation of reciprocation or repayment.
And so it’s only fitting that tonight he became the unquestioned leader of the world’s greatest network of friends after being elected to serve as the 42nd Grand Basileus of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
Ricky’s the first brother initiated in my era of the 1980’s to reach the top leadership role in our beloved fraternity. He’s the hardest working, personable and most relatable Omega Man at any level I’ve ever met.
And even though the Grand Basileus lives in Los Angeles, his frequent calls and text messages about ‘what we can do help Chicago, particularly Black boys’ is evidence of his genuine concern for our network of friends and communities of color everywhere.
Yep. If I wasn’t sure of it before, today I’m certain that Friendship truly is essential to the soul.
Do your thing, GB 42. We’ll take your lead from here.
