On Law Enforcement Appreciation day, I reflect on these words I wrote three short years ago. They all still feel so right and raw. Our family bleeds blue, always will.
On December 31, 2016, I will end my career with the Racine Police Department. With Law Enforcement as a whole.
I choose to leave.
On November 27, 2015 I took a test. The most influential, sixteen dollars and ninety-nine cents, test of my life. It only took two minutes, but it changed my life forever. It told me things were about to get real, it told me that this was no longer about me, or about Phil. It told me I had a little tiny human growing inside of me and I was going to be a Mother. We were starting our family, ready or not.
There is no book to prepare you for that test, there are no guidelines as to what to do the second you read the results, it just is. You are pregnant. Everything in your world suddenly shifts and you begin to look at life in a different way.
As this tiny baby grew inside me, my love for Law Enforcement and the adrenaline that comes with it, dwindled. My desire to run to the danger has subsided. Every time I felt that little baby do Karate kicks inside me, it reminded me this little person depends on me and I began to question my career.
Being in the position I am professionally, I am inside. I am not on the road patrolling and thus in a more “safe” environment. I go to schools, community meetings, and do a lot more administrative things than actual Law Enforcement. I haven’t felt like a Cop in a long time. This was my decision to come inside and take this position, and it one of my regrets in my career. It is what it is however, and it was my decision.
Here’s the thing; I am reassigned to second shift Patrol effective January 1st. Back to what I LOVED, back to the colleagues that I love, back to all the excitement! Back to the Bed Bug infested apartments, back to the dead bodies, back to the child po*******hy, back to the shots fired, and the man with a gun calls. Back to the danger, and serving the many people that hate us so much.
I reflect on myself and our little family and question if this is for me anymore.
