Hisel Flynn’s design of Cascade Cabin is a stunner. And: it may become net positive, to boot. Read all about it on Dwell!

The crisp air in Western Massachusetts has a way of waking the senses. On a fall morning, before the first big snowfall of the year, the hills surrounding the Berkshires glow red, orange, and yellow, and the sound of howling wind moves through the woods. Down a quiet stretch, that seasonal drama frames the home Emily and Sarah built: a small, angular, black cabin tucked into eight wild acres. Stepping inside, you’re met by a curved wall of pale wood that sweeps upward in one continuous gesture, joining the lower level to the lofted bedroom above. The bedroom holds only a bed and three large, tilted windows that overlook the nature preserve adjacent to the property. From the mezzanine, you can see the kitchen and living room below, washed in natural light. The home is built into the slope of the land, flowing gently from the entryway down to the living area in what Sarah calls a “waterfall effect.” “The cascade design does poetic things,” says architect Dan Hisel of Hisel Flynn. “By placing the living room down on ground level, it’s almost like you’re on a picnic blanket, sitting in the meadow.” A custom, white built-in couch with integrated storage wraps the sunken living room, facing a massive glass window that frames the surrounding woods. “On the couch, my favorite view is when you sit and look that way,” says Emily, gesturing to the Yokun Ridge. “That ridge faces east and has really beautiful sunrises, so it’s a lovely place to sit and drink coffee or watch the moon rise.” From that vantage point, the couple have also seen deer, foxes, bobcats, and even black bears cross the clearing, a sign that their goal of coexisting with nature is working. Emily and Sarah tell us all about building their home—and exactly where every dollar went. Donor support can move design research into the world, fast.

For Harvard University Graduate School of Design’s Annual Report of Giving, we wrote about housing, climate pressure, and the everyday buildings that hold a city together. In Boston, the triple-decker once offered attainable multifamily living. Today it reflects a national strain: aging systems, rising costs, and families pushed farther out of reach.

At The Raygency, we translate complex design work into clear, human stories that earn trust and drive action.

Most architecture and design firms don’t have a communications problem; they have a clarity problem.

That’s where communications strategy comes in: not as an afterthought, but as a way to manage your reputation.

When I work with studios and design‑driven brands, we focus on three levers:

1. A clear communications plan that everyone can actually use.
2. A PR strategy so your best work gets seen, shared, and awarded.
3. A website that tells the right stories to the right people.

If you’re leading an architecture or design firm, which of those three feels most urgent for you this year?
