Monday evening is the Jewish holiday of Purim, kinda like our Halloween. We retell the story of the Jews narrowly escaping destruction at the hands of Haman, saved by their new Jewish Queen Esther in ancient Persia. Everyone dresses up in costumes, it’s customary to give food to friends, give gifts to the poor, and of course we eat a festive meal.
For the kids, congregations often put on a carnival full of games, prizes, and lots of fun activities. At my synagogue, Mishkan, they hired a drag queen last year to be our MC and hang out and play with the kids. At a time when people are attacking bookstores for having drag queens hold story time, I found it so powerful that we brought Miriam to bring joy and light to our holiday.
