“Why drive such a nice car if you can’t afford groceries?”2020 Jeep Wrangler. I got it used and she’s got 130,000 rough miles on her. Living out here having a 4x4 is not an option. I wouldn’t be able to get home in the Winter with a car. Having an older vehicle you can’t trust? There’s miles with no cell service. Being broke down on the side of the road, miles from anyone with no cell service isn’t a smart choice. Be smart. Stay Western.

There’s 13 grocery stores for a Reservation the size of West Virginia. The prices are high, items are limited and often not the freshest quality. There’s two official food banks on the reservation and you can get food one a week.

I’ve sold food on the Rez for 5 years. I wanted to create a recipe for people who may be new to selling food and don’t have a lot of money to invest. This recipe didn’t make as many servings as I expected. If I would have sold all 6 bowls I would have made $16. I sold 1 and gave away 4, ate 1 so I lost $14. I’m thinking Cajun Spaghetti next time. I’ll get it. Stay Western 🩵

What would you do if you had $3 for lunch? Eating from home can be cheaper but what if you don’t have enough to buy a full loaf of bread, meat and cheese.

Correction: Many do build their own homes! 🏠And some live in homes that have been passed down. Like mine. AND I’m not saying every bathroom looks like mine! This is an old house that needs a lot of repairs. I want to put up trim and fix the hole but before I fix the hole I need to fix the toilet and that takes more money than fixing the hole. The bathroom is also three different colors and looks like a daycare 😆 Painting is also on the list.

I’m not wearing gloves but I wash my hands frequently when there could be any cross contamination. Most kitchens don’t use gloves. I normally wear a hair net and I completely spaced. With unemployment here on the Navajo Nation at 48.5% many locals sell food. It can be overwhelming when you’re learning to cook and don’t have much money to start with. This may not sell in your area but you have to know your clientele. I know my audience. I’m spending $20 at my one local grocery store and trying to create a recipe that people can use when they’re just getting started as a food vendor. Stay Western 🩵

Are these prices similar in your area? Seeing what we can make with $20. Jobs are hard to come by on the Reservation so many of us make food to sell. It can be overwhelming to get started especially if you don’t have much to start with. I had to choose ingredients that I thought would stretch, like potatoes. You also have to pick a recipe on what you think would do well on in your area. We’re real meat and potatoes out here. Coming from a long line of Arizona and Texas cowboys, I’m right at home.
