Imagine your audience being locked in to hear what you have to say before you even begin your opening statement.

You don’t have to work as awkwardly hard to gain their attention in that first minute of speaking because as soon as they saw you they thought “ok I want to hear what she has to offer. She looks like she has something good”

Because this is what the human brain does.

Your audience has already formed an impression of you within the first few seconds of seeing you. Before you even have the chance to speak. And majority of it comes from your visual image.

Their brain has decided whether or not they see you as capable, trustworthy, and someone they want to give their attention to.

And once that impression is made, you’ll have to work way harder to change it.

You might not think it’s fair to be judged based on your appearance when you are a credible expert, but we all do it in our subconscious mind.

So as a visible woman who is growing a business or in a leadership role, why not use this knowledge to further support you and your mission?

I’m always reminding our styling clients that confidence is built from doing it repeatedly, even when it feels a little uncomfortable. I challenge them to do it and do it often. And I’m finding the same is definitely true for public speaking.

I’m doing the thing even though it feels uncomfortable.

And I’m finding that each time, it feels a little less nauseating (listen…if you get it you get it)

But aside from just doing it, I have found a few tricks that help me and might help you too as you’re out here marketing your brand. Here we go!

🌹 put on an outfit that feels like a powerful version of me
🌹 spend time in prayer beforehand
🌹 mingle with a few people there before if possible
🌹 have sour candy on hand to eat just before if I’m feeling really nervous (I saw this from an online public speaking coach and I’m telling you it’s crazy but it works)

And honestly, don’t have crazy expectations and don’t forget to just be human. I’m learning to read to audience and pivot where needed rather than sticking to a set script.

If you’ve ever beat yourself up for not knowing what looks good on your body, this is for you.

You think you should just know because you’re a woman. And you wonder why it comes so easy for her, but out of reach for you.

And not only are you not liking what you see in the mirror, but the shame of not knowing is also eating at you.

But this knowledge isn’t something that is or should be magically there.

You might think that learning how to dress your body is limiting but that’s far from the truth.

When you understand your body and which silhouettes + styling techniques work best for you, it becomes incredibly eye opening.

You see the possibilities. You open your eye up to things you’ve never tried. You begin to see yourself differently, realizing your body wasn’t the problem, the clothes were.

That inner critic that shows up as you’re presenting goes silent. You know, the one that tells you everyone is looking at “that part” of you that you don’t like so much…

Instead of tugging at your clothes or hiding in your body language with arms crossed, you can move with more ease, focused fully on your audience.

THIS is why learning to dress your body is important. Not to limit you with rules, but to get yourself out of your own head.
