As the first week of school is underway, we’re looking back at one of West Side School’s most memorable traditions. Ellis Island Day brings history to life as fourth graders step into the shoes of early 1900s immigrants, experiencing a journey filled with medical inspections, legal examinations, and the hope of beginning a new life in America. 🇺🇸

After the March fire threatened this year’s event, the West Side community came together to make it happen—proving once again that some traditions are worth preserving. Here’s to a new school year filled with learning, connection, and the traditions that make West Side special!🍎🎒✏️
Thank you and Meghan James for these great photos!

Nathan Hale can be considered many things: a hero, a martyr, a failed spy.

Join Toby Kissam and Town Historian Robert Hughes for a presentation on the many theories about Nathan Hale. Was he captured in Huntington? Were his famous last words his own?

The original Jones Manor was a 40-room Georgian mansion built by Walter R. Jones in 1850. It was destroyed by fire in 1909 after a kerosene lantern left burning in the cupola ignited the home. Although the Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department's 1852 hand pumper was brought to the scene, the mansion was a total loss. The fire may have inspired Walter Jennings to donate a steam pumper to the department the following year.
At the time, the estate was owned by Dr. Oliver L. Jones and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Jones. Oliver died from a gunshot wound in 1913; while it appeared to be su***de, his family maintained the shooting was accidental. Their daughter, Rosalie Gardiner Jones, later inherited the property. A leading suffragist known as "General Jones," she led marches to Albany and Washington in support of women's voting rights before her death in 1978.

Cold Spring Harbor residents welcomed summer with an afternoon of music and community at Music in the Park on Sunday, June 28. The afternoon began with the Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department presenting the colors, followed by the National Anthem. Families, friends, and neighbors filled Cold Spring Harbor Fireman's Park with lawn chairs, picnic blankets, food, and drinks as they settled in for a performance by Pat Farrell and the Cold Spring Harbor Band, a Billy Joel tribute band.

The event was made possible through the support of local businesses that continue to invest in our community.
Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make another Music in the Park a success. We look forward to seeing everyone back at Fireman's Park next summer!
