One of my goals — even though I am sick — is to keep every single one of my appointments.
Living with pulmonary hypertension means my life revolves around doctors, tests, phone calls, and follow-ups. Some days I’m exhausted before I even get dressed. Some days just walking to the car feels like I’ve already run a marathon. But I still go.
Keeping my appointments is my way of fighting back.
It would be easy to cancel when I don’t feel good. It would be easy to say, “I’m too tired,” or “I’ll reschedule.” But I’ve learned that with chronic illness, you have to be your own advocate. No one will fight for your health the way you will. Showing up matters.
Every appointment is a step toward stability.
Every test is information.
Every conversation with my doctor is a chance to adjust, improve, or prevent something worse.
Being sick doesn’t mean being careless. It doesn’t mean giving up responsibility for myself. If anything, it means I have to be even more intentional.
Some people set goals like traveling more or working out more. My goal is simpler, but just as important: stay consistent with my care. Protect the life I still have. Do my part.
Because even though I am sick, I am still committed.
Committed to my health.
Committed to my future.
Committed to showing up for myself.
