This was a fun one to make. These kinds of projects take a lot of coordination and dedicated people.

The Coaledo Tide Gate Replacement and Beaver Slough Fish Passage Project will bring significant benefits to the local community by enhancing ecological resilience while supporting agriculture. By replacing an aging tide gate and improving fish passage, the project restores access to 490 acres of tidal wetlands and 11.4 miles of coho-bearing streams—critical habitat for salmon recovery. Riparian habitat enhancements included in this project will improve water quality, reduce sedimentation, and establish a thermal corridor to help combat rising stream temperatures that threaten fish populations.
For local landowners and ranchers, the project ensures reliable water management and drainage for lowlands, preventing infrastructure failures that could be caused by outdated tide gates. The new tide gate system includes a Muted Tidal Regulator (MTR), which optimizes tidal exchange, allowing fish passage while maintaining necessary drainage. Additional project features such as wildlife-friendly fencing and off-channel watering stations support agricultural operations while protecting sensitive habitats. Channel enhancements implemented will further improve tidal flow, benefiting aquatic ecosystems and reducing the spread of invasive species.
By fostering collaboration between landowners and various project partners, this project balances environmental restoration with agricultural needs, strengthening the community’s long-term economic and ecological sustainability.
