It's time for another big marketing meeting.

Reports are pulled, you come into the meeting knowing how much revenue you made this year, you have your internal YOY numbers. Next year's plan is being presented.

Somewhere around the 10 minute mark, your eyes start glazing over.

Website traffic: UP 35% YOY
Social Media Followers: UP 140% YOY
Leads: UP 30% YOY
Revenue: UP 15% YOY

Sounds good, cool, run it back next year, right?

Not so fast, you want to grow right? Let's add an additional 10% to the budget.

Sure, it worked last year, makes sense for this year, let's just scale it proportionally. We want a 10% growth next year, just scale the budget 10%.

Before you agree to your 2027 marketing plan, take the time to look at what actually worked in 2026 and, more importantly, what goals it worked towards.

Some of your marketing may have done a great job for last years goals, but we need to evaluate the plan based on your 2027 goals.

Don't build your 2027 plan on autopilot, before you sign that proposal, call VSB. We provide the clarity and confidence you need to make an informed decision about your 2027 marketing investment

Yesterday's content talked about following your leads through your CRM and out the other side, whether that be closed jobs or lost work.

Let's take that a step further. Now that you've followed the lead and have all of the data—your closing rate, your revenue numbers, total profit, cost per lead, cost per job, and more—do those results actually line up with and support a business goal you had set for 2026?

- Maybe the goal was increased profit margin or increased revenue.
- Maybe the goal was to simply keep the new crew you brought on busy.
- Expanding your work in a specific service area could be another goal.
- Maybe you were already at capacity and didn't need more jobs at all. You needed the ability to be more discerning about the right jobs.

More leads and more customers can look great on a report, but "more" isn't automatically a goal.

As you review your marketing in 2026, go back to the goals you had for the business and compare them to what marketing actually produced.

Good marketing numbers aren't the goal. Business results are.

Let's take a look at your 2026 marketing metrics and your business results and find out what exactly worked, what didn't, and how marketing this year moved you closer to your goals.

Your marketing report shows 400 leads generated in 2026.

That's awesome. We are up 80 leads over last year, but what happened to all of those leads?

- How many were legitimate?
- How many were actually the right type of lead you were looking for?
- How many estimates were sent out, and how many of those jobs were won?
- What does your revenue look like?

Leads are important. They represent your customers, but leads are not the end of the story.

As you start reviewing 2026 and how effective your marketing was, don't stop at just the number of leads and overall revenue. Follow those leads as far as the data allows you to.

Your CRM, accounting, website forms, or even spreadsheets may hold more information to use next year.

You likely cannot connect every single lead to a clear lead source, and that's okay.

The goal isn't perfect attribution. It's having enough information to understand what happened to create the lead and what happened after the lead came in so you can make better decisions next year.

Are you making marketing spend decisions based solely on Cost Per Lead and your gut feeling about how business is going?

Your ads may be working great, and work may be coming in, but is it the right kind of work?

Making sure you have the information needed to allocate your marketing dollars is what we do. We bring the marketing data together with your business data to help ensure that your marketing is working for you.

The goal may be to pack the schedule, or it may be to optimize toward higher-ticket work. Either way, let's make sure your marketing is moving your business in the right direction.

“When we get into the numbers, my eyes just glaze over.”

I was meeting with a business VP last week, and we were discussing the VSB model and how it applies to business owners.

When we started discussing how owners and executives have to navigate marketing metrics and dive into data such as CPC, CTR, CPL, attribution, impressions, and reach, he said his eyes start to glaze over.

Those metrics are important, and understanding them can absolutely help, but they are just one side of the equation.

You need the information that is relevant to making a business decision. Leave the marketing metrics to the marketer. They understand the metrics.

You understand your business.

That's why VSB sits on the owner's side of the table, making sure all of the right business data and marketing data make it to the same table.

Then we spend the time interpreting the data so you can spend less time deciphering it. You get to make your decision, then work ON your business and not in the weeds.

Does this sound familiar?

Your click-through rate is up, cost per lead is down, conversions are up as well, and web traffic is growing. Oh yeah, also your follower count is booming! 😊

That's awesome. Every single metric in that report could be 100% accurate, but meanwhile, you are sitting there across the table thinking to yourself, "I closed half the number of jobs this month, and the jobs I did close were not great."

The truth is, the marketing results on their own don't always match what the business is seeing.

You know your business, and your agency knows your cost per lead, conversion rate, click-through rate, website traffic, and which campaigns generate the most leads.

You know which leads are actually turning into the right customers for your business and which leads match your goals.

Neither side really has the whole picture.

Good marketing decisions happen when your business data is connected with the marketing data. Your agency doesn't need to run your business, and you shouldn't have to become a marketer just because you own a business.

You just need both sides of the information making it to the same table.

Why bother with the second opinion? I mean your current marketing seems to be working, right?

So why bother with the second opinion?

Because you are still investing your business' money into marketing, and having another set of eyes to make sure that everything is working cohesively can provide clarity and confidence in what you are doing.

That's what the VSB Second Opinion is designed to do. I'm not looking for reasons for you to fire your agency or to even sell you replacement services. I am solely looking at your marketing from your side of the table.

What marketing channels are you currently operating in? What does each channel cost you, and what results are you seeing compared to the business data on your end?

From those different data points, I provide you with a few simple categories on my report that allow you to make the real business decisions.

- What to Keep
- What to Change
- What to Monitor
- Things to Consider
- Questions to Ask

Sometimes we find something that needs attention or identify a missed opportunity.

Other times, the answer is simply that your marketing is well aligned with your business goals, and we provide you with what to look towards in the future.

The goal is not to find something wrong. In fact, I removed any incentives on my part to sell you new ex*****on services. I will NOT attempt to sell you marketing ex*****on services through VSB. I am no longer accepting new ex*****on clients strictly for the purpose of being able to provide clean, unbiased, incentive-free feedback.

At the end of the day, I provide clarity, confidence, and experience to your existing marketing.

Maybe it's $5,000, $10,000, or even $20,000. Either way, it adds up to a lot of money. Is it too much, or not enough?

Depending on where your business is and its particular goals, it may be exactly where you should be, but you could also be over or underspending.

The better question is: Does that spend actually make sense for my business and goals?

Your Google Ads report looks great, your organic web traffic is growing, and social media followers and engagement are up. Your agency is hitting all of the metrics that you hired them to hit.

But what happens after the lead comes in?

Was the lead properly qualified? Are they turning into estimates, or better yet, the right type of estimates? Are they becoming paying customers? Are they buying the services you want to grow? Are they located in your target market areas? Is the profit from those leads actually worth what you're putting into marketing?

Marketing data only tells part of the story. Your business data tells the rest.

Someone needs to be looking at both before you decide that $10,000 should become $15,000, $5,000, or stay exactly where it is.

That's the clarity VSB provides. We get to know your business, and we're here to support YOU.

Because you shouldn't have to become a marketer just because you own a business.

We work with you, not for you!

Let's be 100% honest here, they may be right. Maybe you do NEED more budget.

An agency recommending an increase in marketing spend isn't automatically a bad thing. If the opportunity is there and the numbers support it, spending more may be exactly what your business needs.

But before you say yes, ask a few questions so you can make a business decision instead of guessing.
- What indicators are you seeing that tell you now is the right time to increase the budget?
- How does increasing this budget get me closer to my actual business goals?
- What results should we expect from the additional investment, and how are we going to measure them?
- Is this a permanent adjustment, or are we capitalizing on something you're currently seeing in the market?
- And maybe most importantly: what happens if we don't increase it?

Your agency should be able to help answer those questions. But as the owner, you still need someone looking at the recommendation from your side of the table and asking, "Does this make sense for the business?"

That's where VSB comes in.

Having someone on your side who knows the right questions to ask and the right data to look at helps you make informed decisions without having to become a marketer yourself.

It's your money. You should understand why you're spending it.

If you're ready to spend less time deciphering your marketing and more time focusing on your business, send VSB a message. Let's take a look at what you've got.

Who's actually looking out for the business owner?

It's a question I have thought a lot about since I began working in marketing, and it's something I have always felt a little at odds with.

A business owner may be working with an agency, a freelancer, someone managing social media or Google Ads, and another company running their website.

Each vendor may be handling their piece of the pie well...

But there's still a problem:

Who is looking at all of the pieces from the owner's perspective to make sure there is cohesion?

And I'm not just talking about cohesion between the different marketing channels. I'm talking about something bigger:

Does the marketing actually align with the goals and direction of the business?

I've sat on the other side of the table, giving an owner a pile of reports, highlighting key metrics on different pages, and explaining what's working and what isn't.

But I've found myself wondering:

Did the owner walk away confident that they actually understand what's working and what isn't?

Do they know exactly where their leads are coming from — and which sources are producing their best leads?

If they were handed an additional $10,000 to invest in marketing tomorrow, would they know with confidence where that money should go?

That's where I'm taking VSB.

I want to represent the business owner and serve as their independent marketing counsel — someone looking at the entire picture from their side of the table.

Sometimes that may mean identifying areas where marketing costs can be reduced or dollars can be reallocated more efficiently.

Other times, the answer may simply be:

"Your agency is doing a good job. Let's keep doing exactly what they're doing."

There's value in that answer too.

My goal isn't to find something wrong so I can sell another service.

It's to give business owners the information, perspective, and confidence they need to know that their marketing dollars are being allocated as effectively as possible toward their goals for their business.
