“What do I do? Where do I start?” 😬
We’ve all asked ourselves these questions when introduced to new situations or unfamiliar processes. And it can be pretty stressful!
But by following these steps, we can begin to clear away the fog of uncertainty to reveal great new possibilities …
=============
1️⃣ DON’T PANIC.
The moment you begin to stress yourself, a whole slew of biological things start happening and then you can’t think. LITERALLY.
Among blood flow going to your muscles to prepare for an “escape” …
Your prefrontal cortex (rational thought) becomes less efficient due to the rush of hormones …
Your amygdala (emotional processing center) becomes more active and more likely to take over with emotional reactions vs logical response …
And more!
So remember to breathe. Take a step back from the situation and review as a new observer.
Meditate, even. Be sure that you approach a situation as objectively as you can.
Remove those emotionally-colored tinted glasses.
2️⃣ Always think win-win.
Drop the blame game. No one is perfect, and often it’s our miscommunication and lack of empathy that gets us into trouble.
Come to the table with the intention of ensuring everyone wins, and you are more likely to bring people together on a common goal.
3️⃣ Be realistic & review the data.
What you feel in the moment, is not always objective.
Emotions & those hormones can even cloud your judgment.
So when you’re stressed and don’t know what to do - stick to the facts.
If for example you feel like someone is getting more feedback than you in your work?
Perhaps it REALLY IS that you’re just that awesome they don’t have any for you.
How might you garner better feedback? Is there a project you’d like to start and would appreciate their insight on? In what ways do you wish to grow that your leadership can aid you with?
Or … if you’re starting a new job or project, you already know you need info things like:
👉 who are the stakeholders?
👉 what is a current or potential timeline? (are there any big dates to be aware of?)
👉 what do we currently do?
👉 where do we want to be?
While other questions are still valid, this will start to reveal a picture of your next steps.
=============
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Not all situations are the same, but by following these 3 simple steps?
I’ve found it easier to be more calm and get more done - even improving rapport with my peers!
I hope this was helpful. 💚
