🚀 Launching today: The PR Guide to Building a Powerful Media List – PART ONE.

A successful PR campaign starts long before you send a pitch. It starts with research, strategy, and identifying the right journalists and media outlets who will care about your story.

This new four-part series breaks down the process of building an effective media list—from the foundation to ongoing maintenance.

Part One: The Foundation of a Great Media List covers:
✔️ What a media list is (and why it matters)
✔️ Why quality beats quantity
✔️ The essential information every media list should include
✔️ Why research is the key to successful media outreach

Whether you're a small business owner managing your own PR, a nonprofit looking for more visibility, or a marketing professional wanting to strengthen your media strategy, this series is for you.

Stay tuned for Part Two: How to Find the Right Media Outlets, Launching August 3.

The first of a four-part blog series, "What is a Media List and Why It Matters" provides a general overview and anatomy of a media list.

One of the biggest reasons great businesses struggle to generate publicity is surprisingly simple: They're pitching the wrong people.

That's why I'm launching a FREE four-part blog series, The PR Guide to Building a Powerful Media List.

A media list isn't just a spreadsheet. It's the foundation of every successful media relations campaign.

Based on my 30+ years of public relations experience, I'll break down the fundamentals of developing a media database in simple, practical terms as a starting point for your PR journey.

The Series
July 20 - Part 1: The Foundation of a Great Media List
August 3 - Part 2: How to Find Media Outlets
August 17 - Part 3: How to Find Journalists and Their Contact Information

A very special interview indeed! Patricia Pell was the very first LIVE guest interview on KERA Arts new show, NTX Now, hosts Corning and Miranda Suarez!

80-year-old-first-time-playwright, Patty discussed her new play, "Momma Won't Die," which has had two weekends of sold-out performances in Dallas! Last chance to see it this weekend, June 26 & 27.

ARE BUSINESS CARDS DEAD?

I’ve been told that no one carries business cards anymore. What?!? In a world of QR codes, LinkedIn connects and digital contacts, the humble business card still says something important: "I came prepared to connect."

And honestly? I still love them. The feel of a beautiful cardstock. The weight of it in your hand. A clean layout. Great typography. Pointed corners versus rounded corners. Minimalist or bold. A unique design can say so much about a person or a brand before a single word is spoken.

I get excited just talking about it.

There’s a reason Japan has an actual business card ritual. The exchange of a card is treated with intention and respect because it represents more than contact information — it represents identity, professionalism and relationship-building. It means something.

The best networkers don’t just exchange information — they create memorable moments. A well-designed card can still make an impression, spark conversation and reinforce your personal brand long after the event ends.

That said, the real power isn’t in the card itself. It’s in the follow-up. A business card without a meaningful connection is just paper. A thoughtful follow-up turns it into opportunity.

What do you think — do you still carry business cards?

(And yes - I framed the business card of my previous company as a keepsake!)

PR TIP TUESDAY: Earned media is not about “getting press.” It’s about earning credibility you can’t buy. A feature in the right outlet doesn’t just amplify your brand—it validates it. Focus less on being everywhere, and more on being in the right places.

One of the most valuable parts of attending business events isn’t just seeing a new venue — it’s the conversations that happen there.

Recently, we attended the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting for Champions Social Club, a new luxury private membership club in North Dallas designed for fine dining, curated events, networking and private gatherings. With elegant meeting spaces, poker and mahjong rooms, and an atmosphere built for connection, it’s easy to imagine many business deals, partnerships and ideas taking shape there.

What stood out most to me, however, was a conversation with a fellow entrepreneur about how networking itself is evolving. Today’s professionals are looking for more intentional ways to connect — whether through organizations like local Chambers of Commerce, private clubs such as Constellation Club in Irving and Tower Club in Downtown Dallas, curated dinner groups, or newer concepts like Entrepreneur Dinner Club and Timeleft.

As business becomes increasingly digital, in-person connection is becoming even more valuable. The right room — and the right conversation — can still open doors no algorithm can replace.
