For Melanie and Whit Martin, Lake Highlands has always been more than just a place to live—it’s home, generations deep. Since putting down roots in 1993, their family has grown right alongside the community, with children, siblings, and now grandchildren all finding their way back to the neighborhood.

From long-standing traditions like crawfish boils and holiday gatherings to cheering on the next generation at soccer games, the Martins’ story is all about family, connection, and coming full circle.

Their answer to why so many families stay (and return)? The people. And their story is proof of just how special that can be. ✨

Pets of the Highlands 🐾 Meet Tulip & Bella!

Tulip and Bella are the perfect pair bringing personality and love to the Kirby family! Tulip is the life of the party—an outgoing, playful pug—while Bella is her sweet, shy counterpart who’s especially loved by the neighborhood kids (she even walks them to school!).

These two are all about snuggles over sprints, proving that pugs make the ultimate cuddle companions. With three kids in the house, Tulip and Bella are so adored there’s even a nightly “pug schedule” to decide who gets to sleep with them! 💕

💙 Kids Who Rock: Seeing the World Through Cameron’s Eyes 💙

If you’ve spent time in the L Streets of Lake Highlands, you may have seen Cameron Rossi riding his green bike or swinging in the yard with a favorite book. Cameron is a beloved Lake Highlands teen whose journey reflects resilience, joy, and the beauty of neurodiversity.

From overcoming open-heart surgery as a baby to facing seizures and later being diagnosed with autism, Cameron has met challenges with strength and the unwavering support of his family and community. Today, he’s thriving at The Notre Dame School of Dallas, building independence, learning life skills, and sharing his kindness with everyone he meets.

April is Neurodiversity Celebration Month, a reminder that every child experiences the world in their own unique way. Cameron’s story shows us how patience, compassion, and understanding make our neighborhood stronger.

So if you see Cameron out on his green bike, give him a wave—you may never know how much a small act of kindness can mean. 💙
