UPDATE: DOWNEY POLICE CONFIRM NO ACTIVE THREAT AT CINEMARK PROMENADE

DOWNEY, CA — The Downey Police Department has given the all-clear following an earlier disturbance at the Cinemark theater at the Promenade at Downey, confirming there is no active threat to the public.
Law enforcement officers responded swiftly to the facility after a moviegoer reported that an unidentified male breached an emergency exit door and claimed to have a weapon.
Following a thorough sweep of the premises and surrounding area, authorities confirmed that no firearm was located and no suspects matching the description were found on scene. Officials state there is no evidence of an active danger, and normal operations at the shopping center have resumed.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported breach and verbal threats. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Downey Police Department.

The Alarmists (Existential Risk View): High-profile researchers—including prominent safety engineers at labs like OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as computer science pioneers like Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio—warn about the potential for Artificial Superintelligence (ASI). They argue that if an AI becomes drastically smarter than humans and develops self-improving capabilities, we could face an “alignment problem” where we lose the ability to control its goals or shut it down. 
The Skeptics (Pragmatic / Hype View): Many computer scientists, tech executives, and industry veterans (such as Yann LeCun or Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang) view extinction scenarios as pure science-fiction exaggeration. They point out that current AI models are statistical pattern matchers rather than conscious entities with desires or autonomous agency.
